91  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Re: THE cutest baby booties EVER! NOW WITH HAT!!! on: February 09, 2005 07:41:57 AM

I jumped on this bandwagon, and these were a big hit at my friend's baby shower!

92  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / How to Get Free Yarn and Needles! (no lie) on: January 31, 2005 06:01:15 AM
I hope all you hip craftsters have heard of freecycle. I joined in Arlington, Va. and posted that I wanted knitting supplies - needles and yarn. I thought it was a long shot but worth a try.

I heard from 3 people who gave me books, yarn, and needles. One elderly lady who used to work in a yarn store but can't knit anymore due to health problems gave me about 15 sets of needles, and filled my car trunk full of yarn -- literally! I am swimming in yarn now! She also gave me some neat vintage pattern books. I helped her organize her craft room a bit but it was essentially free.

So all you knitters on a budget, I would definitely recommend joining freecycle: http://www.freecycle.org/!

93  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Re: Fishy Dining Table on: January 10, 2005 06:52:07 AM
Thanks! I think glittery decoupage is a great idea! I have seen that rainbow fish book - maybe I can use it for inspiration.

So...I have heard that a decoupaged table doesn't hold up well - this is going to be a dining table so I need it to last with lots of plates, cups, etc being put on it.

Is the key just to seal it well over the paper?

94  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / HELP! on: January 07, 2005 11:23:09 AM
OK I need help with this project! I did one bootie last night and it turned out sucky. I think my gauge was off, first of all, because it's very big.

But also, can someone explain how you do the white trim? I tried weaving over and under and it ended up not looking fuzzy at all, just a thin white strip, and it's 'broken' because of going under the main color. How did you get a nice solid seam-look??

Thanks SO much if you can help - I really want to have these for a baby shower next weekend!
95  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Fishy Dining Table on: January 03, 2005 12:42:13 PM
My mom found an old dining table at the salvation army and decided that it looked like a fish. So my cousin the woodworker is creating new legs for it that will look like mermaid fins and then we will set to work refinishing the whole thing.

I was thinking we'd sand it down and then do a base coat, and either decoupage or paint on top of that. I would like to have some glittery, scaly things on there too.

We've never done a project like this before so I was wondering if anyone has suggestions or advice on painting furniture?

Thanks for any help or ideas!
96  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Purple baby hat with flower on: January 03, 2005 05:39:19 AM
My first hat! It's just a little too big for my neice but she'll grow into it.

the pattern is from Baby Knits for Beginners by Debbie Bliss. I added on the felt flower by attaching a button to the front of the hat and then making the felt flower with a buttonhole in the middle so it could slide on an off. Then they can take it off to wash it.

Just want to add for anyone having trouble finding good jumbo-size glass beads, I ordered from this site - they are super cheap. looks like they are sold out of the medium size ones.

thanks for your help!

what do you mean by 'adjust the numbers' -- won't i have to change the number of decreases, etc? makes my head spin...

99  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Alpaca yarn gift... on: December 28, 2004 06:42:38 PM

lucky me...for Christmas I got 4 hanks of lovely yarn from a friend's alpaca farm.

I'm very excited about using it to make a hat! but I just took up knitting recently and am still a slave to patterns. So how do I make a hat out of this stuff? Do I just figure out my gauge and then try to find a pattern with the same gauge or is there a sneaky way to get around that?

gracias!

100  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Re: Marble Magnets Supersized! on: November 29, 2004 12:10:10 PM
I bought large (1.5 inch) jumbo (2.5 inch!) glass marbles here: www.wholesalersusainc.com/. they are super-cheap.

They also sell ceramic magnets, but they were sold out when I was ordering so I didn't get any. Instead, I bought the thin business-card shaped magnets at Michael's and cut them to fit the back of the jumbo marble. The marble is kinda heavy but it holds it up just fine, and it makes for a flatter, svelter look than the button magnets.
