31  COOKING / Dessert / I need a good gingerbread house recipe on: December 19, 2013 03:05:59 PM
Does anyone have a tried and true gingerbread house recipe?   Something that doesn't spread, is sturdy enough to build with, and looks nice when baked (i.e. doesn't crack, or get holes in it)   Something simple and easy.

I'm not concerned with taste as no one will eat it!

I'm going to make one this year, I just need to decide on a theme...

Does it have to be a candy wrapper, or can it be another kind of food wrapper?   (I have a kid with allergies, we can't have most candy in the house)
34  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / A House for Hermit Crab on: November 09, 2013 07:37:39 PM
This year, Levi was debating between a "llama" and a "decorator crab".  I talked him into the crab idea!

I used "A House for Hermit Crab" by Eric Carle as inspiration.  This is a type of hermit crab that decorates its shell with various things for camouflage.

It consists of:
- a full body suit/jumpsuit with a front zipper and elastic hood.  Eyes on stalks attached were hand sewn and googly eyes attached to the ends.
- gloves with cardboard inside to give them a claw shape
- Pull on body sleeve that has a dimensional chest piece, and attached legs with wire inside to give them shape.
- Shell, made from a giant long stuffed tube of fabric swirled into shape.  It goes on like a back pack, and has a waist tie that slips under the body sleeve.   On this is a bunch of decorations including seaweed, gems, starfish (which Levi helped make), a snail, sea annenomes.

Here is a video of a 360 view, its pretty hard to photograph to see everything!

35  CLOTHING / Sewing Pattern Reviews / Re: Ottobre Mozart Linen Vest, Beethoven Dress Shirt, Jodhpur Linen Pants on: March 31, 2013 05:41:02 PM
For Ottobre patterns, usually there aren't pattern pieces for belt-loops, there should be measurements given under the cutting instructions
36  SEWING IN GENERAL / Machine Embroidery: Discussion and Questions / tension issues - new brother PE 770 on: March 19, 2013 08:16:07 AM
I have a Brother PE770, I got it in January, so its pretty new. I was doing a bunch of applique designs, and did 5/6 of them, and noticed that each one I did, then tension got a little more off. By #6, it was a huge mess!

The upper thread is super loose, its loopy on the top, and on the back, no bobbin thread shows at all, its just like 1 piece of thread going through all the back and forth of the upper thread. So on the back, all you see is loose, sometimes tangled, upper thread. Its eating through tones of thread.

I tried:
- new needle
- cleaning everything including in-between the tension disks
- changing the upper tension everywhere from -8 to +8, the whole range it can go.
- tried a few different designs
- different thread
- removing bobbin and casing, cleaning everything (there was no fuzz) and putting it all back
- adjusting the screw slightly on the bobbin casing
- different hoops
- leaving it overnight to see if it would magically fix itself in the night
- and finally, yelling at it.

Nothing made any difference at all.

Now what???

The nearest "Brother authorized" dealer is 2 hours away, and this thing is basically brand new. And I need to finish this outfit by friday!

Levi's package from Brian:

He has been using all of this stuff!   The shark is a pencil case, with a zippy mouth.  Levi put his colored pencils in it to take with him to do his schoolwork on the go.   The little round zip pouch he keeps a lego guy in that he likes to carry around.  And the notebook he has been using as a sketch pad, and also wrote down some dinner ideas he had.

Thanks Brian!

We are still trying to find out what happened to Brian's package from Levi, I've been remaking everything because the post office was no help when I contacted them.  Mailing new stuff tomorrow.

Look what I got!

Wrapped up:

Fun erasers for Levi:

These are yoga socks, they fit perfectly, I'm wearing them now!   They are also great for sewing, which I usually do barefoot but its been cold.

Please excuse my weird looking arm:   Rainbow bracelet with "Levi" on it.  I love the fun mix of different beads.  Its comfy too!

Magnets:  The cups I used to keep track of water intake (I have to have 100 oz a day, with the glasses I use, thats 8, so I just flip these upside down as I drink to make sure I get the right amount -very useful), and dishwasher magnet, so we know when to load and unload:

Such a great package!
