1  A Couple Of Questions in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Discussion and Questions by DarklyCrafty on: May 07, 2009 12:59:53 PM
Can anyone here tell me where I can find some white synthetic doll hair? I want to make a doll of a game character and his hair is white (not white-blond but WHITE). I have no idea where to find synthetic doll hair. Well, not white at least. Also, the hair has to be STRAIGHT not curly.
I would also appreciate it if someone could tell me where to find some greenish-grey cotton stretch fabric? Well, it doesn't necessarily have to be cotton as long as it's not shiny and it's got some give to it.
The doll I'm planning on making has greenish-grey skin and I'd be making the doll using Runo's pattern.
The guy in the background of the following pic is the character I want to make a doll of:

If anyone can help, it will be much appreciated! Grin

2  Dolls Made Without Patterns in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by DarklyCrafty on: April 26, 2009 07:30:59 PM

Left is Orochimaru, of Naruto fame, right is Molly, a unique doll of my own making.
Orochimaru is completely made of felt. His eyes were hand embroidered (I suck at it) as were his nostrils and mouth. Molly is made from an old white t-shirt (I like recycling Grin), her eyes and mouth are buttons (like you couldn't guess Grin) and her dress is a remnant of plaid fabric I bought at Wal-Mart. I forget the name of the yarn her hair is made from. ^^;

3  Destroyer and Redeemer: Raziel in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by DarklyCrafty on: April 24, 2009 02:06:50 PM

He's still a work-in-progress as the bottoms of his feet aren't finished and his ears are sticking out too far. Also, he's supposed to have wings.
This is the vampire form of Raziel, one of the two leading characters of the Legacy of Kain game series released by Eidos Interactive and Crystal Dynamics. He only appears in this form in the opening sequence of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. After the opening, he is a wraith-like being.
I've seen action figures of him, which we all know are dolls aimed at boys, but I've never found a plush of him. Since I've loved this character for some time now (almost 10 years...I can't resist his attitude problem) I decided to make a doll of him.
I've only picked up doll-making over the past 4 or 5 months and he is my 4th doll, but only the second to be made using a pattern.
The first doll I made with a pattern was Jareth (found here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=301940.0)

I don't really have much else to say about him at this time as he doesn't have a costume yet.  Grin
But he's still open to critiques. He's also 31 inches tall.

Material list:
Base: muslin (beneath skin)
Skin: stretch cotton
Hair: synthetic hair
Stuffing: polyester fiberfil
Pattern: runo dollmaker's found in the pattern section of this forum

Update:

Those pants are made from faux leather and are completely hand-sewn.

Here are some pics of him as he appears in the opening video:

They're a bit grainy because the tv was having problems the day the pics were taken.

4  Goblin King Plush Doll in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by DarklyCrafty on: April 21, 2009 12:29:08 AM
Pic of Jareth, King of Goblins, Ruler of the Underground:

I've loved Jim Henson's Labyrinth for years and decided that I just had to have a plush of King Jareth. I made this a few months ago and posted him on deviantart to show him to my online friends. I'm now posting him here to ask what other crafters think of him.
Do you guys think he's good for the first doll I've ever made using a pattern? I made two dolls before him but I made them without any kind of pattern and they're really wonky-looking.
What about his clothes? I didn't have a pattern for those but I think that's okay because his clothes are a custom-fit. I referenced many, many, many Labyrinth screenshots to get his costume similar to Bowie's. It's not exact, but I like it.
This is a really bad picture of him, but it's all I have at the moment. I'm not even sure what size he is.
The "crystals" next to him are clear marbles I had on hand.

materials:
pattern: Raggedy-Ann pattern (borrowed from aunt)
doll: soft muslin (it doesn't ravel much either)
hair: felt cut into triangles and hot glued on (I found this technique by accident. The technique can be found here: http://www.jlauportfolio.com/hairtutorial/hairtutorial.html)
clothing: shirt and pants are synthetic blends (don't remember what the blends were), boots are faux leather with felt linings and bottoms

Thanks in advance for any feedback! Grin

EDIT: a pic that's slightly better

Also, he's completely hand-sewn. No machine work on him whatsoever.
