I was cruising my favorite thrift/resale/consignment shop and found A Find-a nice old Brother Pacesetter 702, still in its cabinet. For $20! The owner knows me fairy well--I'm in there often enough--so she let me take it in the back, plug it in and play with it. It has a whole bunch of embroidery stye stitches, which is mainly what I want it for, since my main machine is *very* basic. The tension was a little twonky, and the 'gear shift' was stiff, but it seemed like it was in decent shape, so... I bought it, of course. I cleaned out all the drawers (more on that later) and took it straight to the sewing machine guy. He was having a slow day, so I got to hang around while he checked it out.
Final verdict: It's in decent shape. The main gear has two small cracks, but Kevin says the cracks are tight, not gaping, and the plastic around them isn't flaking, and considering that this will be my backup machine, it will probably last me years yet. He replaced the bobbin case, cleaned and oiled everything and that was all it really needed.
About the drawers...they were full of *everything*. The story I got was that the machine had been previously owned by a professional seamstress who had retired and moved away, and from the contents of the cabinet, I can believe it. Boxes of zippers, boxes of buttons, small boxes of fancy trims and sequins, lace, rickrack, binding, 3-4 pairs of scissors, a box of feet (weird-the feet were all snap-in, but the machine itself is not, and there's no adaptor), a turquoise plastic box that says Brother on it, with more stuff in it...you name it, I probably got two of them. Also, it came with 3/4 of the manual-the first and last few pages are missing, but most of it is there.
The one thing I can't figure out though is how old it is-Kevin said the thought early 60's-ish, based on the design, but didn't know for sure, and I have yet to hear back from Brother about it. Does anybody know? Does the model number (702) correspond to the year of manufacture (1970's)?
Yay! I have a new toy to play with!!
