101  Re: Poppet Outfits Only! in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by averyg on: April 29, 2009 11:35:58 AM
I ma not even going to lie, I am not the best poppet clothing maker. I have made 1 sewn outfit and 2 from felt (which I hand stitch or hot glue, not the most sophisticated I know), I just feel as if I have more control with felt.

So I completely envy all of you who can sew outfits...

I made 2 little playful dresses for my fantasy poppets. The first one has an almost die-cut felt border piece on it I found at a dollar store and the second poppet has little sparkly flowers decorating her dress.

I finished my next 2 little ladies (3 in total, 4 more in progress)! You can find them here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=302958.0.

103  2 Fantastical Creature Poppets for the Price of 1 (Picture Heavy)! in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by averyg on: April 29, 2009 11:11:40 AM
So, it is true... I am obsessed with poppets. I have 3 done now and 4(?) on the go. Anyways, here are my 2 latest gals. Both are fairy-is, sprite-ish, mermaid-ish-ness (I also have an obsession with fantasy). I always seem to take their hair-do inspiration from whatever my little sister wears for the day Smiley.

Here is the mer-fairy, you may remember her just as a head from here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=302028.0 (she could not decide for the life of her if she wanted to be a mermaid or a fairy, so together we came up with her dress bottom which could either consist of leaves or scales. The bodice of her dress is made from this crazy pucnhed-out felt scrapbooking ribbon that I found (actually both of them are entirely clothed in felt). She has a tiny necklace and bracelet set.

Dress bodice close-up:

And this little missy is somewhat of a forest or wildflower sprite. Her skirt also consists of leaves and she is decked out in flowers.

And here are the two besties together:

I am finally feeling like I am making progress with my poppet technique. I am doing better with sewing their heads on (I got a curved needle to help me) and I think that the darker head is the best I have made to date.

And of course here is the link to the poppet along: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=205341.9000 (thanks ghilie!)

Do you hand sew the felt on or do you machine sew it on. I just love how it looks.

I machine sew the felt on, I got the idea from this poppet I got in a swap:

I like to play around with the inner ear colour, I have some some heads that have pink inner ears, a green, a blue, and a grey in progress (in one of the dismembered poppet pictures). I personally like to try to match the inner ear colour with either the hair colour or the clothing colour (not really for this first poppet as much, though the inner ear colour is in the hair also).

Oh no, jointing was hurting her?

I always feel like I am hurting them too, my mom laughs at me as I continously wince as I am jointing them.

Smiley

Anyways,
I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how to better sewing the head onto the poppet. I love making the bodies and such, though not the heads, and I have decided that I don't really like sewing on the heads (just because I don't think I properly know how to, though I am sure that I will like it better with practice), but I can't have a colony of naked, headless poppets.

Here are some pictures of how the first head-sewing-oning went:

As you can see I did not use a ladder stitch (I don't really know what that is), but luckily the thread and material colour are almost identical so you can't really see the stitches (all that much). And her hair really covers up the stitches, but her head material overlaps her neck material (if that makes sense), as opposed to the poppet that Silverwing made me, nothing overlaps (I keep comparing my poppet with the one Silverwing sent me to see how poppets should(n't) look).

Thanks!

Hey,

So I finished my first poppet today and I whipped together an outfit for her in less than an hour. The dress top was inspired my bathing suit for this summer and the bottom is just a simple skirt (I have a matching one). Anyways, here it is:

There are a couple of mistakes I have to fix, but I am pretty happy as I have never made poppet clothes before.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your help the other day about what size eyes to get. Right after everyone's response my dad was all like "I am going to the States for business, wanna go to Hobby Lobby with me?" So I was luckily able to get eyes and not order them online. Anyways, I have about 5 poppets on the go and about enough fabric for 9 more...

And here is the link for my first completed poppet: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=302028.0.

Here is a sneak peek of the poppets that I will be spending all of tomorrow working on:

108  Ugh... finally a finished poppet out of me! in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by averyg on: April 21, 2009 05:53:14 PM
So I have been stalking poppets for quite a long time. I wanted one for soooo long, so I was so excited when Silverwing claimed me for one in the OWS43, and sent me the most gorgeous poppet ever (still my favourite). So I just knew that I had to hop on the poppet bandwagon, so a couple of weeks ago I went out and bought a sewing machine (I had been handsewing everything for a relly long time). So I had the poppet pattern (thanks ghillie!) and the sewing machine sitting around for a couple of weeks without any action... until I bought some weird cheap fabric made of unknown contents to test my skill, and let me tell you I felt like a serial killer with a box full of different poppet body parts, just sitting there. So I took the initiative to go out and get some real fabric but would you believe that I was unable to find alova suede anywhere?!? I got lots of weird looks at all of the fabric stores I went to, so I was stuck with velour, with I was kinda mad about, but now with working with it, I love it. And would you believe that I could not ind safety eyes anywhere in Canada either? Thank goodness for Hobby Lobby and my dad travelling to the States a couple of times a week for business... Anyways, I made a bunch of good poppet bodies, without any heads, but today I thought that I should take the initiative to make the gals some heads before I started anymore bodies. I have some difficulties sewing the head by machine, so I handsew the front part and back part together. Anyways, enough rambling... Here are my poppets (some still in parts... until tomorrow that is).

In a dress I whipped together less than a hour ago...

They all turn out a lot taller than I expected, just more to love I suppose Smiley

A more detailed picture of her hair texture (sorry it is blurry):

And here is the next poppet that I am working on (she just needs a body). She can't decide if she wants to be a fairy or a mermaid (that is why she looks kinda sad), so for now she is a fermaid or a mer-ry.

And here are the next couple of bodies/ poppets I am working on...

I find that I like making the bodies, sewing them, stuffing them and jointing them more than I like to clothe them and give them hair and eyes and such... I dunno why... Also, I personally sometimes find that I like mine more without hair, but some members in my family think that it creepy. And luckily I think that I have enough fabric to get at least 10 more poppets... which is good since I just finished my first year of university (yesterday!) and have nothing to do, so I suppose you can expect a lot more poppets (plus without any distraction but TV I can crank out 2 (nude ones without any clothes or hair) a day.

Today I  received my awesome package from AbbyRose... She claimed me for a wallet and a purse...
an owl purse inspired by something like these http://www.wists.com/averyg/6ecb671696f5cb64f55fb80ed46b631b?offset=40 AND http://www.wists.com/averyg/0596239a67762eef0b3cc18a004f93c6?offset=40... Though now that I look through my wist I see that the purse is almost identical to an owl plush that was on my wist at http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=292467.0... Which I would have never thought to have taken the plush owl and made it into a purse... and inall honesty, I think that what AbbeyRose did was much cuter than my examples...

Anyways, here is the cutest little owl purse...

And the wallet! For being the first wallet of this style that she has made, I'd say that this is pretty darn cute...
The inside of the wallet (this is almost identical to the wallet that I had on my Wist, though much better)...

because it has a change pocket and the ones on my wist did not!
(I apologize, this picture is somewhat blurry... I think that I jumped when I took it)

The wallet honestly has the cutest fabrics everywhere... and I mean everywhere, I was just paying around with it, opening pockets (which there are lots of) and keep finding new patterns everywhere!

Thanks so much AbbyRose!

Today I received my little felted alien from CamOovas. He is just the most adorable lil' creature, I especially love his superbly detailed nostrils AND she made him my favourite colour!

And his little speckled bum...

And making best friends with my poppet that Silverwing claimed me for this swap...

Thanks so much CamOovas... I am tempted to give a go at felting!
