2  GLASS CRAFTS / Glass Crafts: Completed Projects / Re: Guitar Art Challenge on: May 23, 2012 01:52:27 PM
Just found out that my guitar just won an online design contest from "Slumpy's".  Slumpy's is a glass mold company.  It's the place where I got the mold to make the facemask from!  I won $250 in Slumpy "bucks" for anything my little heart desires from their company!

I'm so excited that I just can't wipe the smile off my face!  Whoooo-hoooo!  Happy dance, happy dance, happy dance!

Wow!  Thanks everyone for the compliments! ::blushes:: I really appreciate it.  Truly.

fiddlegirl8: In the many years that I've been crafting and creating to actually be called an "artist" is really something special for me.  This piece makes me feel like I have really earned that moniker.   Wink  Thanks for saying it!

HSG:  And thank you for noting the attention to detail.  That's what I focused on.  It's the little things like that really can make a piece shine! (That and I'm as anal as all get out! I just gotta make sure that it's as perfect as I can get it...and still keep my sanity! LOL!)

Speaking of shining....So.  One major lesson I learned with this mosaic?  Yeah.  Don't EVER use textured glass with mosaics.  Tongue Unless you're a glutton for punishment and enjoy spending hours and hours with a dental pick scrapping grout out of the waves and ripples of said textured glass.  Yikes.  Literally 10+ hours of just detailed cleaning.  With a pick. Two days worth of time.  *sigh*

But in the end the textured glass did really added some oomph to the piece.  Cool

Thanks again everyone!  I'm pretty proud of this piece and think it turned out pretty darn good.  It's good to know that others agree!

Happy Glassing to you all!
6  GLASS CRAFTS / Glass Crafts: Completed Projects / Guitar Art Challenge on: May 01, 2012 10:11:36 AM
Earlier this year I was selected along with 16 other artisans by a nearby community for an Art Challenge.  We were all given guitars to create on and with.

I am a ginormous Beatles fan.  Always have been.  My favoritest all time Bealtes song is "Here Comes the Sun".  If you're familar with the song you will know that the introduction to the song is a guitar solo.  The music score along the side of the guitar is that music.

The facemask was formed in my kiln.  It was a single layer of cathedral glass draped over a ceramic mold.  I also fused the moon in the kiln using two layers of the same glass.  The round dots for the music notes were a single layer of black glass fired in the kiln to create cabachons.

I used "Mac" glue to adhere the various types of glass to the guitar.  Mac glue was recommended to me ages ago by HSG here on Craftster.  If you're thinking about doing a mosaic, I would also highly recommend the use of that glue.  It's the BEST.  Hands down.

As any glass artisan knows...photographing glass is a real pain in the a...!  So what you won't see on my photographs is the fact that behind the face mask is a mirror.  So you if you look face on to the mask you'll see yourself.  Kind of creepy cool and totally unexpected.   Roll Eyes

The blue background glass starts out at the bottom a very light blue and as it progresses up the guitar it becomes more cobalt to a dark midnight blue at the top.

So.  There ya go.  I don't even want to think about how many hours I have into this thing.  It was a lot.  A LOT!  But I'm very proud of how it turned out.   I hope you like it too!

Thanks for looking!

Thanks everyone!

MareMare, sorry to hear that you were having a crappy day but I'm glad to hear that I helped a tiny bit to make it better.  You know how it is...what goes around comes around.  I've got a lot more helping to give you to pay ya back for all the help you gave me!   Cheesy

So, yeah...Nature's Garden.  Yup, I used them for most of my FO's.  They have an incredible selection, good customer services and good prices.  They used to be mostly candles but they are really increasing their product line to include soaping stuff.  Oils, additives and the like.

The have a very active Facebook page and they really take to heart what the customers are saying and asking for.  They've also partnered with a soap maker now for new tutorials, recipes and ingredient testing.  It's pretty cool.

I think they're working pretty hard on becoming a one stop shop.  Which I would totally love!

A couple of my favorite FO's from them are:
Cracklin' Birch (#1 favorite!)
Cucumber/Wasahbi/Cilantro
Clean Cotton
Fruity Rings
Lilac
Hippie Christmas

MareMare do you remember that it was a few short years ago that I was making my first batch of soap?  You really helped me along with that and I totally want to thank-you for the encouragement and advice.  Without you...this creation would not have happened.

You are the best!!  Truly.  I totally mean that. Thanks again!  Smiley
