1  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Re: Leap Year Fiber Friday 2/29/08 on: February 29, 2008 09:37:18 PM
woo!  love so many of these yarns!  friday is always so inspiring...  i especially love the great colors this week!  mmmmm colors!

i did a lot of spinning this week, all with wool dyed/carded by not me.  first, assorted fiber all dyed by insubordiknit.  this is berry garden:

and this was also dyed by insubordiknit and carded with sparkley bits, so i named it sparkle ocean:

and then i got a bunch of awesome batts from a swap with milky robot, and spun up two so far.  first, magical forest... cheesy name, but it's the best i could think of.  it's mostly green, with bits of pink and blue and purple and more, and i added some stripes of lighter green that i dyed, then i plied it with thread, experimenting with some coils and fun messy thread wrapping...

and last, muppet dreadlocks!  also from a milky robot batt, i love this one, the photos don't do it justice!

oh my goodness i can't list any specific yarns that i love because i love too many!  so much amazing creativity and beauty!  man, i love yarn so much...

here is my only handspun skein for the week:

i called it "olive ocean" but i'm not so sure about the name... it's a mini-skein, just practicing a little bit, about 40 yards.  i think it will become a neck warmer.

this week i also used my wheel to ply together a couple yarns from unraveled sweaters.  this is one strand of a wool/angora blend, hand-dyed with kool-aid, plied with a strand of 100% cotton. about 65 yards.

pmpknpunk, that 2 ply looks fantastic!

and the cotton ball yarn is superrad!

yay!

ooh i can't wait either!!  i got my first spinning wheel (louet s10! yay!) with my xmas money a week ago, and i've spun a bunch already, getting the hang of it!  here is my most favorite, my latest skein, i'm calling it "happy" because it makes me happy to look at it!

i dyed all the wool - one single of greens and blues, and the other oranges, yellow, and red.

and then my first experimentation with self-striping handspun last weekend, this single is mostly sections of orange and green, with some random sections of brown, yellow, purple, and blue..

and then this last one is a tiny mini-skein, just trying out plying a handspun single with this weird yarn/string stuff unraveled from a thrifted sweater...

ok i hope to become a fiber friday regular now that i have my wheel!  i posted here once before when i was playing with my drop spindle, but oh man, drop spindle spinning was no fun, no fun at all... this wheel is the best thing that ever happened to me!

yay i finally get to be a part of fiber friday!  i've been admiring/drooling over all of your yarn for months, you are all so inspiring!  so this is only the second yarn i've ever spun, and my first time dyeing roving, so it's messy and uneven and all those beginner things, but i love it because i made it!

i took tons of photos because i was excited, so if anyone wants to see the singles and/or the hat i knit with it, all the shots are here: http://flickr.com/photos/-leethal-/sets/72157600024463979/
8  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / my first three spun yarns! ("calico kitty" colors!) on: March 30, 2007 02:33:02 PM
hi, i'm new to this spinning board, you all have made some gorgeous yarns!  i'm just getting started - bought this starter kit http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=5292774 from etsy.  so here is my first attempt:

which i tried to make into a hat, but i didn't realize how tiny the ball was...

so i made another little mini skein, trying to match it to the first so the hat would all blend:

and then, for my third go, i spun up the rest of the kit wool and plied it!

i'm in the process of dying a bunch of roving right now (with kool aid and food coloring) - i'm gonna try to make one single shades of oranges and yellows, and another with shades of blues (and maybe greens, i haven't decided), and ply them together.... maybe this plan is a bit too much for my beginner skillz... wish me luck!
9  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Completed Projects / Re: YARN DYEING 101 - KOOL AID on: March 21, 2007 12:43:56 AM
i just want to add my yarns to the thread.  this was my first try at dying - 6 batches: the first starting with brown yarn, the next two starting with sage green yarn, and then three starting with off-white yarn.  i got better with each batch, learning as i dyed....

yay!

Sort of OT, but your picture quality is really good, even the zoom-ins.  What camera do you use?  Do you do something special to take those zoom-in pictures?

i actually have a BA in photography, a pretty high quality digital slr camera (the nikon D80, which i bought with craft show earnings! yay!), and a nice lens with a huge aperture (the fixed 50mm f/1.4), which is how i get the cool looking close up shots.  it's pretty easy to get good looking shots with expensive gear, but if you have a normal point-and-shoot digital camera, easy ways to get better pictures of your crafty objects are: put in on the "macro" setting (that's the flower icon) if you're trying to focus up close, and make sure you hold the shutter button halfway until it's done focusing; use a table top tripod (you can get these at most camera stores for about $4) or just set the camera down on a table instead of hand-holding to avoid motion blurs; try playing with white balance options to get more accurate colors with indoor lighting (use the lightbulb/tungsten lighting or the flourescent light settings and you won't have yellow or red photos).  these are all super common problems people have when shooting objects, especially small objects, indoors with point-and-shoot cameras.  hope this helps!!
