...those look an awful lot like the origami frogs I used to make, did you adapt the pattern from that??

Yeah, to make these you have to start with the frog base.  Good eye!

Here's a pic of me being nerdy... I made some origami x-wing fighters and then posed them with pipe cleaners.  The back drop is just a black sheet of scrap book paper.  The "Death Star" is a post-it note and the planet on the right is from an L.L. Bean magazine.

... can't seem to be able to "poke" them right to make the points.  I tried to do it with my fingernail, but the paper just won't give.  What do you use?

You can try using the edge of a ruler to indent the sides of your folded pentagon... but if you're having trouble poking the sides in there's usually something a bit off... like your paper is on the thicker side, your wrapped it too many times, or like meganbailey said, you wrapped it too tight.
