5  Leather neck cuff Common Night Hawks in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by Bakeneko on: November 01, 2013 02:22:58 PM

This art jewelry piece is a leather neck cuff with an inlayed etched copper medallion and pyrography of common nighthawks.

I still have trouble taking good pictures of both the copper and pyrography. The cat was not helping.

I sent these in to a government office this morning. Nothing fancy just trying to keep people's morale up. You need chocolate when you are worried about jobs and bills and such.

8  Craftster is my Happy Place-Craftster's 10th Anniversary Cross-Category Challeng in Dyeing: Completed Projects by Bakeneko on: August 11, 2013 06:41:11 PM
"What Craftster means to me."
Craftster is my Happy Place. Grin
To me, Craftster means a place where I can learn, share and be supported in my crafts, even if they are not perfect.
For this challenge I decided to learn sun dying and to make a tutorial for it. I had never sun dyed before this summer.

The 12 steps of Sun dyeing

Supplies
Sunlight
Fabric ( washed and ready to dye. Most dyers suggest Synthrapol but that is kinda hard to find locally. I used a tiny bit of tide, lots of hot water and vinegar)
Jacquard Dye-Na-Flow Mini Starter Set ( you can use other products this is what I used)
Opaque shapes to block sun light (I used cut outs of thick textured cardstock. I tested with plain white cardstock it was not opaque enough. There was not a lot of contrast in the blocked and unblocked fabric. I have also used leaves and rocks they worked well)
Spray bottle of water
Paint brushes
Weights

Tip: Work fast before it dries!

Step 1
Find a sunny day without a lot of wind. Bright sunlight is best.

Step2
Place your clean and ready to dye fabric on a flat surface, in the sun. Here I put it on a card table covered in trash bags.

Step 3
Spray your fabric down with water. Wet it but not to the point where there are pools of water.

Step 4
Weight your wet fabric down so it does not curl as it drys or blow away

Step 5
Squeeze a liberal amount of dye na flow on to your wet fabric

Step 6
Spread the dye na flow around with a brush until you get the color how you like it. I  used a clean brush between colors.

Step 7
Squeeze out your next color and spread it out with a clean paint brush.  You have to be quick, if it dries before you are done the sun blocking will not work.

Step 8
Quick while it is still wet put your sun blocking shapes down

I filled this up with some of my happy things. A fire breathing T-Rex, Cats, Horses, Big and Little Totoros, Red pandas and Craftster.

Step 9
Put weights on your small likely to blow away sun blocking shapes

Step 10
Wait for it to dry completely in the sun. Dont touch it until it is dry.  Like hours and hours later.  I did dishes and laundry at this point.

Step 11
After it is completely dry, peel off the sun blocking objects and see what you have created.

The reveal is super exciting.

Step 12
Heat set it according to the dye na flow instructions. I ironed it for 3 minutes with paper between it and the iron.

You are done! Bask in your new fabrics awesomeness.

Additional notes

Not all the sun blocked images came out sharp and clear. This is probably because I took too long and it started drying before I had all of them down or because it was not sunny enough. I dont know. But it is OK.  Like I said Happy Place.

A bird pooped on this during the drying process. So if you are going to do this beware that that is an option. I just folded it under the hem when I made a flag out of it.

I made a flag out of it, next time I do a craft show I will fly it.

Project Geekdom (if any): Discworld
Bonus Points: Nerdy Disc world  covers
Project name: Sci fi and Fantasy book cover magnets
Project Page Link (if available):
Brief Description: Photo transfer on to polymer clay. I collect photos of crazy cover art.   The Thrones of Madness is my favorite, although I have never read it, because nothing can beat a Hawk Tiger.  In The Cube has what can only be described as a naked mole rat with a gun. Awesome.  I love all the discworld covers. I like how these came out because they look like worn paper backs.
