81  COOKING / Dessert / Re: cake decorating - come share!! on: November 24, 2004 08:40:55 AM
WOW! you guys are really talented!! No matter how hard I try, I can never get my cakes to look like anything but hills! Even with my aunt's help, who does some CRAZY cakes, I just don't have a green cake thumb.

If you want any inspiration for your designs, or if you just want to see some really neat cakes, go check out the "recent creations" section of my aunt's website at www.sweetartbylucila.com
82  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: xmas gifts for a huge family on: November 16, 2004 02:10:50 PM
I have a big family too. Year before last, I made all of the girls (and some of the boys) cute little bath sets. they each had:

1. one of those washcloths you can get for a dollar that comes all bunched in shrink wrap and expands when you get it wet (I think I got them at old navy near the registers).

2. A cheap bar of colored glycerin soap from the dollar store because I didn't feel like making any.

3. Bath cookies (the recipe is here with a lot of others)

and 4. bath salts (homemade) - I got this recipe from aromathyme.com because I couldn't remember where I got the original one I used. They have some other good recipes too, so check their site out.

# 2 C epsom salts
# 1/2 C sea salt
# 4-6 drops peppermint oil,
# 2-3 drops red food coloring
# Place 1 C of epsom salt and 1/4 C sea salt in a bowl.
# Add 2-3 drops peppermint oil.
# Place the remaining ingredients in a second bowl.
# Mix all ingredients well.
# Layer the red and white salts in a clear bottle or jar.
# place the lid on the jar and then put a paper doily over the lid, tie a red ribbon and a candy cane around the lid/doily.

The only problem I had was finding jars. I ended up having to melt the wax out of some candles in cute jars and going to the emergency room on christmas eve because the glass was really thin and while I was washing it out, it shattered in my hand. so don't do that.  Grin just shell out the cash for real jars, because I tried to improvise and failed miserably (all our christmas pictures have me with a HUGE bandage on my hand. so funny!)
83  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: Nerdy Craft Ideas (2 topics merged) on: November 12, 2004 08:31:13 AM
I'm a little late, but if he's into music, I know this really cool nerdcore rapper named mc chris, and every nerdy friend I've ever given a CD of his to has loved me forever. It's not very crafty, but it's pretty nerdy, so I hope it counts.

anyhow, you can order these awesome cds from here. Some of you may actually know of mc chris (chris ward on the credits sometimes) - he does a few voices on some adult swim shows and worked for williams street until recently.

oh, and since the first cd is available for download right from his site, you can download a song (I strongly suggest Fett's Vette) and let him sample it before you buy him the cd. THat way you would know if he likes the style.

AND THEN you can get crafty and make him a nifty CD case or something.

Hope this helps. Don't you just adore nerds?
