1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: 50%+ Christmas Gift Challenge on: December 21, 2006 11:37:53 AM
HOORAY! I am done done done with all my items! I stayed up last night until 3 am baking stuff and dipping things in all sorts of chocolate! I will post pictures in a separate thread, probably. I have to buy one or two more gifts, but all my crafty gifts are finished!!

Another updated list. Bold items are done, italicized items have been changed from the original post.

BF: something purchased that he requests (will probably end up being a video game), a homemade book about us with patented MS Paint stick figure illustrations, DM screen for D&D (since he is always borrowing one from one of our friends - Might not have time for this one, though)

Mom: homemade cranberry white chocolate biscotti, mint chocolate fudge some purchased (cheap!) tea and hot chocolate, bookmark, marble magnets, family photo (if I can get all the kids together)(I can't get everyone's schedules to work so no picture this year Sad

Dad: Florida Gators marble magnets, gators bookmark, family photo

Dad's GF: Florida State Seminoles marble magnets & bookmark, plus tea and biscotti

Sister: handmade baking recipe book with easy recipes and pictures. muffin tin (purchased)
bookmark (ran out of iron on vinyl!)

Older Brother: star wars bookmark, mint chocolate fudge
Brand new sister in law: Mythbusters bookmark, husky puppies marble magnets

Younger brother: teenage mutant ninja turtles bookmark, a purchased shirt that he wants very much. (chuck norris facts)

Nephew: A purchased marshmallow shooter gun. He is only 4, and he told me he wants that very much so I told him I'd get it for him. Smiley

Most of my friends: a combination of bookmarks, marble magnets, homemade biscotti and/or oreo bark and chocolate dipped peanut brittle and tea or hot chocolate.

another friend: crazy hotep eye design bookmark, purchased glass art

All the dogs I know: homemade dog treats (I'm making extras too so I can go to the park and give them out (with owner's approval, of course))[/b] and FSU collar bandanas

Secret Santa from an RPG forum I frequent: purchased Nerf gun and a conan the barbarian bookmark. Plus a nice card (purchased), some hershey's kisses (purchased), and heavy metal marble magnets (ac/dc, iron maiden, black sabbath, etc.). (he got his gift and loved it!)

Hooray for crafty christmas!!

All I need to do now is make the biscotti, dip the peanut brittle in chocolate and possibly make one more batch, make the cookie bark, and I also decided to dip some pretzel rods in chocolate b/c it's quick and easy but looks really nice if you drizzle white chocolate over it and dress it up a bit.

Sorry for the fuzzy pics  Embarrassed

Here are my completed marble magnets.

and the decorated tins

I didn't do too great on them, there were lots of air bubbles in the first batch. But the second batch came out great so next time they will look nicer!

tracymarie,

what recipe do you use for your dog treats? I usually do peanut butter each year - MacDuff's PB shortbread. (MacDuff being a dog, of course  Wink )

I haven't actually decided yet!

I was thinking about this one from stretcher.com

Peanut Butter Cookies

4 1/2 cups flour
1 1/3 cups cornmeal
6 Tablespoons peanut butter
1 cup applesauce (with one batch, I just pureed a regular raw apple)
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup sunflower or sesame seeds, optional
1 egg for basting

Mix all dry ingredients. Add peanut butter, milk, eggs and applesauce. Mix well until dough is firm. Let stand for 15-20 minutes. While waiting, set oven at 350 degrees. Roll out dough on floured surface to a 1/4" thickness. Cut into shapes with cookie cutter. Baste with egg and then sprinkle with seeds (if desired). Bake 30 to 40 minutes. Cool on wire racks. Makes approximately 4 dozen biscuits, depending on the size you cut them.

OR

this one from soapdelicatessen.com

Meaty Dog Biscuits

Instructions:
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cups dry milk
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 egg, beaten
flavoring - meat drippings, or broth (enough to make a stiff dough)

Instructions:
Combine flour, dry milk and garlic powder in a medium sized bowl. Add egg Mix well, adding enough flavoring to make the dough stiff. Roll to 1/4 inch thickness on floured surface, then cut into shapes. Bake at 350 F for 30 minutes.
7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: Need Help!! Gift for home ec. teacher. on: December 13, 2006 01:57:46 PM
I really like idea #1 - you can never go wrong with treats as gifts!*

Or, since she is a crafter too, how about finding out what types of crafting she is into? First, of course, recommend that she visit craftster  Wink, but also, if she's into beads, you could make her the bead bowl and give her some beads/wire to work with. You could make her a gift that goes with her crafty personality!

*unless the recipient is allergic Sad

Does your D&D player ever run the games as dungeon master? If so, all DMs like to have a DM screen - it is basically just a short trifold posterboard to keep the players from seeing their dice rolls - you could print, decoupage, paint, glue whatever onto it and he can use it when he runs games. In FACT, I think I will now make one for my BF - thanks for the inspiration!  Grin

Older Brother: star wars bookmark, still can't decide what else
Brand new sister in law: Mythbusters bookmark, not sure what else

Younger brother: teenage mutant ninja turtles bookmark, possibly a purchased shirt that he wants very much.

Nephew: A purchased marshmallow shooter gun. He is only 4, and he told me he wants that very much so I told him I'd get it for him. Smiley

Most of my friends: a combination of bookmarks, marble magnets, homemade biscotti and/or oreo bark and chocolate dipped peanut brittle and tea or hot chocolate.

another friend: all that plus a piece of purchased glass art

All the dogs I know: homemade dog treats (I'm making extras too so I can go to the park and give them out (with owner's approval, of course)) and FSU collar bandanas

So far I'm doing well. I need to get to my mom's and sew the dog bandanas this weekend and finish up the marble magnets I botched the first time around  Embarrassed
10  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Stitch And BOTCH / Re: marble magnet disaster! on: December 13, 2006 01:36:02 PM
Thanks for the suggestions! I went ahead and kept some of the not-too-bubbly ones that were acceptable, and redid about 30. I had enough leftover supplies that I didn't have to boil anything, but I kept the botched ones so I can do that later without feeling bad about wasting money Smiley

So, I am going to retry probably tonight. I think my main error was sticking the picture to the magnet first and then attaching the marble. I will stick them to the marble first and THEN the magnet this time.
