21  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Re: Vitamin E enlightenment please on: July 01, 2013 06:24:20 AM
Thanks Lique, I realized a large part of the problem was I initially used it when it was still too warm, so I ended up using waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. I was asked by a co-worker that's a hardcore runner if I could make some sort of lotion bar in tube form, so I'll definitely give that a try! Grin

Thanks MareMare! Thinking about it and I realized that a) I probably used too much to put on my skin and b) my skin gets super dry in the winter (snow in Buffalo is hell on the complexion!), so I'd say the recipe is still a winner. But I'll look into lighter alternatives for the summer months. I just get tired of buying lotions! And since I'm now known as the "Amish Hippie" Huh around the office, I guess I have to live up to the title!

So I made the body butter (a tiny batch just to start) and while I'm loving the after effects, for me its quite greasy, which I get taking the ingredients into consideration. But is there a way to cut it back some? Can I halve the amount of oils? Original recipe is here

1/4 c. olive oil (Originally called for 1/2 c olive oil, but I divided it with the fractionated coconut oil)
1/4 c. coconut oil (fractionated)
1/4 c. aloe butter (aloe and coconut oil From WSP, in place of coconut oil)
1/4 c. beeswax
1/4 t. Vitamin E oil

Eh, what can you do. On one hand I am going to see them this weekend so I'll be able to get the materials. On the other, it killed my "Happy to leave work and do something fun" vibe.

I FOUND IT!!!! *Happy Dance*

Sally's beauty supply, 1 oz tube for 2$....plenty to make a small batch of lip balm with some left over.

Now to try to not be annoyed because the one supplier shipped my beeswax to my parents house instead of my own *sigh*

$5-6 for cocoa butter but $12-18(?!?!) for shipping *scratches head*. I don't want to load up too much on supplies. I've got such bad crafting ADD lately that I don't want to build up a stock for one craft only to turn around and start something else in a week. I just finally finished potholders that I started in December Roll Eyes

Believe it or not, their shipping is almost double what other places are. I'm going to try a beauty supply store and a health store tonight to see if I can find it. If not, I'll wait til WSP has it back in stock or just suck it up and pay the shipping. Worse case scenario is WSP and Bulk Apothecary are only a few hours away and I can use it as an excuse to visit friends.  Cheesy

I found this blog/recipe to start with lotion. I like the one she has for lip balm, but I'm having a heck of a time finding cocoa butter where its not going to kill me on shipping and everything I find locally is cocoa butter mixed with other stuff, including alcohol Undecided

I've been looking at lotion and lip balm recipes lately and almost all of them call for vitamin e....does it really have that many miraculous superpowers? I notice some people refer to it for a preservative (Which I know isn't a good idea to assume that).

I'm guessing that recipes with beeswax, coconut oil, olive oil, etc would already be rich with moisturizing properties. Does Vitamin e just give it oomph or is it like that little "key" ingredient that brings it all together??
