1  ASIA / Japan / Re: Japanese cultural advice on: May 06, 2005 03:28:57 PM
I don't know much, cause nothing like this ever came while I was living in Japan, but I do know that silver is the appropriate colour here.  There is a certain type of knot that is used for different ocasions.  You could try to google it.  I just know about the silver because when I was taking lesson on how to put on my kimono all by myself I was told that I was never to show the silver side of my fan, because that was for funerals and times of mourning only.  Sorry I wasn't much help, but I thought I would pass on at least what I do know.

2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / Re: 80s theme party on: May 06, 2005 03:20:23 PM
Omigosh!  I did this with my friends three years ago and it was definitely the best party I ever had!

Me and my best friend had so much fun getting ready for it.  Here's a couple of things we did....

- 80s music of course.  We made about 5 CDs as to not run out of music.  I still listen to them all tons.

- 80s dress up.  everyone had to come dressed up 80s.  and if they didn't we had "the box" which they had to dress up from.  needless to say "the box" was filled with the most ugly 80s clothes and accessories we could find.

- movies.  we  didn't really watch them but had them on in the background.

- games.  i dug out all my old toys and games from the 80s.  cabbage patch kids, rubiks cubes etc...

- and we played trivial pursuit (our fave game and released in 1984 (i think, somehwere around there...)) and i had prizes for everyone.  record bowls and notebooks made from 80s albums like thriller and lionel richie and platinum blonde.

- decorations i used anything and everything i had from the 80s.  music posters, record covers etc.

it was the best party ever and everyone had so much fun.  we all still talk about it to this day.

good luck with your party!!
3  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: funky black purse swap - pictures! on: May 05, 2005 09:25:27 PM
Gosh, I just have a cheapie digital my parents got me a couple of years ago for Christmas.  Olympus D-390.  Compared to all the cameras out today it's a piece of crap.  But it works well enough for me.

And about the book.  It is absolutely amazing.  I have always been really into clothes so for my birthday in grade 10 or something, my mom got me these 2 books.  The bags one and A Century of Shoes.  They are both so cool.  And I have so much fun getting inspiration from all the vintage accessories.  They area definitely great to have.

Yes I did take pics!

Here is the bag I sent.  She said she liked 1930s style bags, so I used my handy, A Century of Bags to look up cool designs.  So this is what I came up with:

And the back:

And here is the original Elsa Schiaparelli I based it on:

And now to the purse she sent me.  She researched me on the site and found out that I like to study Lady Jane Grey.  Just a little history refresher to those who don't know; Lady Jane was queen of England for 9 days in 1553.  Really obscure historical figure but I love to get my hands on anything to do with her.  You may have notice my screen name...
Anyways she made me this incredible cilyndrical bag out of this sparkly black fabric, and the best part?  It's covered in different pictures of Lady Jane!!

I love it so much!  Thank you! Thank you!  Thank you!

And now on to some pictures.....

6  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Art project Swap: Sign ups: CLOSED mail by 5/30/05 on: May 04, 2005 10:12:04 AM
I like the idea of a well known piece of art.  The Mona Lisa is not my favorite in the art world because it is so cliched but I think it would be perfect for this.  The colouring page on that site looks awesome.  And there is a lot that would be in every piece of the project so that everyone will get a substancial part of everyone elses work.  ....I dont' know....just my thoughts.

10  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Handmade Jewelry Swap! on: April 22, 2005 11:01:54 PM
Semira,

I'm so glad you like it.  I was a little worried cause it is pretty funky, and some people might not be up to wearing it.

One of my favorite things to do....In a hardware store when they ask you if you need help, just tell them no, i'm just looking for some jewelry....Their looks are priceless!!
