1  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Days for Girls on: August 13, 2014 06:57:50 AM
I have been sewing reusable feminine hygiene kits to be distributed by Days for Girls in underdeveloped countries where girls do not have access to these essential items. Girls who lack these supplies may miss 3 to 5 days of school per month and fall behind over time. This problem may lead to their quitting school altogether. These simple supplies are essential to their finishing school and improving their future. I have noticed a few Craftsters making theses and posting on boards as part of stash busting or "50 projects in 2014", etc. If you are not familiar with this non-profit, please check their website: daysforgirls.org for more information.

I really enjoy making the flannel liners and I know others who have a serger may prefer sewing the shields. Making the tote bags also eats up stash. Those who knit or crochet could make washcloths. This swap would include those who sew, knit, and crochet. We would exchange crafting elements of the kits in equitable amounts (shields, liners, washcloths, and tote bags) so that we each could build one or more kits while concentrating on the part for which we have the most supplies (i.e., cotton for totes and shields, flannel for liners, or cotton yarn) or enjoy making the most. We could exchange the extras too, hotel-sized soaps, panties, and zip lock bags so that everyone could contribute to complete kits.

Please let me know your thoughts and if you already craft for Days for Girls.

You can choose either one or two partners. You will craft two patches for each partner that are inspired by their themes. You will have two weeks to craft. And here's the new twist inspired by Wise One: put together a kit for your partner to include two patches of fabric (one each for the front and back) and thread, sketches, embellishments, or even a list of ideas for you partner to create their own patch. This is just a simple kit that will fit into a Ziploc sandwich bag, nothing elaborate.
There are lots of inspirational patches from previous swaps, so check out some of the galleries here:

8  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Craft my username or "What IS that tiny animal and WHAT is it doing?" on: February 01, 2013 12:43:11 PM
So many Craftsters have interesting user names and avatars. How did they com up with that? Just what exactly does that mean? Don't some make you smile at their cleverness or laugh out loud at their zaniness? Maybe some fill you with jealousy "Why didn't I think of that?"

I propose a swap where we craft our partner's user name or avatar or something that inspired our partner to choose their user name/avatar.
Some examples: Craft a sign for a craft room or booth, personalize an item of jewelry, sew a stuffy or Poppit that resembles a character or animal (i.e., Rollermama receives mama and baby sock monkeys wearing roller skates). Even something as simple as initials can inspire craftiness, (i.e, initials made out of buttons for a hoopla wall.)
The questionnaire will ask for the story behind the name/avatar, along with the usual likes and dislikes, and then the partner will take it from there.
Let's unravel the mystery of our partner's user name/avatar so that all the world can finally say--"Oh, now I get it."

We'll be making some awesome Steampunk stuff for our homes (or wherever else we want to put it), it can be decorative, useful, or something in between! While most people may think art and papercrafts, it can also include lamps, stuffed animals/dolls, tablecloths, notebooks, and anything else you use! As long as it isn't wearable, it works. This will be a 5 point swap, with the requirements of at least one item being a medium or large.

10  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Slippery hats, what to do? on: October 29, 2012 12:35:24 PM
I could use some advice. My friend's mother is about 70 and has very little hair. She would like some knit hats (like a slouchy hat) to put on to cover her hair when she goes out. As it is now she has to wash her hair and put product in it before she goes anywhere and that is very inconvenient. The real problem is that the caps she has tried (including headbands) just slide right off her head and she doesn't have enough hair to use clips of any kind.
First, I was thinking of knitting a lacy open-work hat with a fine yarn, to keep the weight to a minimum. Do any of you have knowledge of a product that can either be applied to a finished hat or knit into the band to keep the hat from slipping; something like silicone, perhaps, that would be grippy, but not tight like elastic? I would appreciate your suggestions.
