1  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Make-a-Friend Round 6 (Summer 2010) Signups Apr 9 - May 3 on: April 26, 2010 12:11:05 PM
I think I will start working on my questionnaire. I have heard that previous rounds were a lot of fun. I'm on a tight budget at the moment, but that will just make it more fun (I like a challenge!). I have a few trips scheduled over the summer, so I will have to work ahead, but once I have a partner, that shouldn't be too hard.
2  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: Quilts for Kids Quilt-along (Charity for Kids) on: April 25, 2010 09:38:37 AM
Okay, here are my tops so far. These won't be quilted for a few more weeks, and as soon as they get quilted they will be boxed up and mailed off.
I started these on Friday morning and got a little addicted! I also went to an all day sew for my quilt guild on Saturday, so I was able to make one there.

"Royal Imagination" - my favorite, by far.

"Hot Guitars" - this was the original kit I was sent. Sorry for the lack of close-ups. My photographer was cranky!

"Fancy Firetrucks" - this used some old blocks I had that didn't turn out the way I wanted them for the original project. I was one short, so I used a leftover from the guitar quilt to fill in. The centers of the pieced blocks have a firetruck fabric in them.

"Bright Cats" - this is a crazy Laural Burch holiday fabric with cats on it. I don't think it's too noticeable that it's a Christmas fabric. I used to LOVE crazy bright stuff like this... now, not so much, so it felt good to use it up and move it out of my stash.

I have fabric to piece backs for two of them, and the kit obviously came with a back. I just need to figure out something for the back of the cats. I haven't decided if I'm going to fold the backing around to bind them or make binding. If I do traditional binding I'll also have to figure out what to use for that.

I'm going to look in my stash and see if I can come up with one or two more, but I'm running out of good focus fabrics at the moment. I usually keep an eye out on the clearance racks and buy cute kid fabrics for projects like this when they are $5/yard. That's where I got all the fabric for the first quilt. But, lately I haven't been buying much at all, so there isn't a whole lot to choose from.

I don't have photos of mine yet, but I currently have 3 quilt tops done for QFK and one in progress. I'm going to visit my Mom in a few weeks and will quilt them all on her longarm, so I'm stocking up on tops to quilt while she's at work.

The kit I got had guitars with flames. Then I made a really brightly colored stash quilt with cats and polka-dots. Then a firetrucks & flames stash quilt and finally, the one I am making now has knights, princesses and dragons on it. I'm just making the four-patch ones so far. My pregnant brain is pretty happy with simple, repetitive math!

I have enough leftover from the the one I am making now to piece a backing, but the firetrucks and cats will need some luck in my stash to find something. Of course, the local quilt shop has a $5 a yard sale rack, so at worst I;d have to spend $7.50 on the backing - not too bad. I'm having a blast making them though and it has sort of busted me out of the rut I've been in lately of not doing much sewing.

I may try and get photos tomorrow. It will depend if my quilt holder will cooperate!
4  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Re: English Patchwork/Hexagon Quilt - do I NEED paper templates? on: April 06, 2010 10:17:26 AM
Do you NEED them? maybe not. But I have used them and it makes it really easy and I would think, possibly more accurate than doing it without paper. You can buy packs of 100 precut cardstock hexagons for only a few dollars and you can reuse them over and over, which eliminates cutting them out and such.

And I've seen very old hexagon quilts with the papers still inside, so I think many ancestors did use paper. It just helps you keep the shape nice and neat.
5  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Re: It's a rug!! on: April 03, 2010 03:08:40 PM
It looks great. I love rugs like that. My parents used to make braided rugs from old wool clothing but nothing from cottons. I love that i's scrappy and big and looks like it would be comfy on the feet.

I made t-shirt yarn in that general way, but instead of scissors I used my rotary cutter and ruler (from quilting) and was able to get the strips cut really quickly.
7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: IYP 15 - The Winter Waltz Gallery on: March 25, 2010 09:09:29 AM
Thanks greenfaerie! It's all grey and overcast here again today so another bad day for photos.

I love my Lantern Hill notebook the best. One of the photos shows all the little bookmarks I can use, instead of having divided sections for the cookbook. Awesome idea and it makes it really adaptable.

Yay!
8  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Frugal Living Swap 2: Return of the Cheap (SIGNUPS 3/18- 3/31, SENDOUTS 5/1) on: March 24, 2010 07:00:56 PM
I'm still on the fence about joining. I WANT to but my husband is wandering around the house griping that we're broke. One of his complaints is the amount of money we've spent at the post office lately. Now, it wasn't all on swaps mind you, but some of it was, so, if I do sign up it will probably be at the last minute. But if anyone else hasn't decided... it's totally fun! It's great to look at your stash in new ways and get new (frugal) ideas.

Please check the list on the first page and make sure you are marked correctly for sending and/or receiving. There are a few people in my group that still need to check in (and possibly one or two in Pixieval's group too). We need to hear from you if you are marked incorrectly or haven't sent yet.

Thanks!
