3291  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Bookmark Swap - Round 4 (Signups 1/25-2/5; Sendouts 2/19) on: February 03, 2011 03:56:46 PM
Hehehe, I was a double major in English & Technical Theatre for a year and a half.  Then I transfered schools and dropped English because I was just far too devoted to my Theatre work.  Ended up minoring in Medieval Studies by accident too.  I enjoyed all the lit classes that I took as an English major, but that department never understood my interest in theatre and told me that if I stayed with it, I'd never be able to pay the bills.  Ha!  I ended up getting a full ride to grad school for Costume Design and I get to freakin' LOVE what I do every day.  And it totally pays the bills!  Plus I still read constantly.  Cheesy

I'm still a bit leery of the method of swapping done here--I'm used to everyone sending to the host and then having them swapped around and sent out. No one gets flaked on that way. Though I've only got one full swap done here, I've been swapping and hosting for a few years now elsewhere. I was really disappointed to the point where I just ended up dropping out of my second swap here because I got my partner shifted so many times I wouldn't be able to come up with something personal and good in time to send out. So I'm hoping for some good experiences to come so I can forget about all that!

With a great theme like this, I know it'll be super fun!

What swap were you in that the organizer changed your partner?  I've completed 25 swaps here on Craftster, and never seen that done.  I've seen an organizer have to leave for a family crisis (completely understandable!), and a few members flake (sad & annoying), but I've also many MANY more people offer to step up and Angel for someone else, or offer to take on an extra partner or group when someone withdraws (completely heartwarming).

Stick around Craftster and give swapping here a good shot.  I assure you pinkleo, Ex_Gratia & I run a pretty tight ship and we do our best to make sure each swapper has a good experience.  And in the mean time before DOfDH2, you might want to check out pinkleo's One Tiny Harry Potter Thing Round 2.  (A swap in which you make 1 incredibly well done item, that is 4"x4" or smaller.)
3293  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: 11 Quilts in 2011 Quilt Along on: February 03, 2011 05:55:05 AM
Ooh, is anybody interested in a contest this month? Anyone who finishes a quilt off of their list can be entered into it and then I'll do a random drawing from those people. The winner will get some fabric!

Sure, why not!

Me too.  I guess about .05 cents on the average spice, and a little more if it was something I remember buying that was more expensive.

So when we get paired up do we get paired up with people from the same house or another house. I ask because something I'd like to make takes me a little longer than the allowed swap time but I'd love to make it anyway..... so if I knew which house to make it for I could get started. Wink

If they didn't like/need/want something like that I know I could find someone else who would I just wouldn't mind getting started early. Cheesy

There are a great many factors that go into partnering.  Shipping Internationally and Allergies top the list.  Next comes swap and crafting experience, and sometimes age.

Further along in the partnering process I do take some requests into consideration such as "I'd like to swap with another Hufflepuff", etc., but they are not the only factors involved.

If you are seriously interested in making something you've dreamed up, I'd recommend making it for yourself.  That gets the crafty urge out of your system, allowing you to move on to other things.  Then when you eventually get partners you should be able to focus on their interests and create something personal, something just for them. I always find it's best to allow yourself to be inspired by your partner because you get some of the most creative crafts that way.

Wow, I was so impressed by just the trunk.  The whole package is... beyond... fabulous.  I could hardly get to the end before hitting "this rocks!"!!

Would you be able to share anything on how you made the trunk?  Was it a trunk-shaped box that you covered?  I love it so!

I bought a trunk shaped box at the craft store, and then stained it with wood stain markers.  I then mod podged on the travel stickers & Hogwarts crest and glued the leather strapping on.  The whole thing got a few coats of matte mod podge to seal it all (not over the leather).  Hope that helps!
