1  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Re: My first yarn!...ish...[PICTURES INCLUDED] on: September 25, 2008 10:12:54 AM
Didn't get around to dyeing anything yesterday, as some family things came up that needed to be dealt with ASAP.

As for plying, the thought of it is rather intimidating for me. I've watched some youtube videos on it, and they all seem to make it so bloody complicated! I'm not sure what I want to do with it yet. I may try to ply it, or I may just leave it as a single.

I use the park method, but I really hate having to spin and stop and mess with the yarn/roving/whatever. Plus when I'm dealing with as much roving as I've got, I kinda have to do some sort of pre-draft to separate the fibers down into something smaller and more....yarn-like, for lack of a better term. But thanks for the tip, though! I may give it a try when I'm dealing with smaller amounts of roving.

I've got my finished yarn wound into a tiny itty-bitty skein, and I think I'm going to dye it today. I'll try to snap some before and after pictures for you guys.

Thanks!

I rather like the dark side. Are there cookies? Actually, forget cookies; is there roving?

Oh how freakin' cute!

I love bats. Hell, I love anything Halloween-y.

He looks like a Bartholomew to me. Don't ask me why, 'cause I couldn't tell you, that's just the name that popped into my head when I saw him.

It looks pretty wonky, but I finally spun my first yarn!

I know why it's wonky; let's just say that 1lb of Merino is a lot to draft. And yes, stupid me tried to pre-draft the entire pound at once. I certainly didn't spin it all at once...it didn't take me long to realize just how fragile and finicky roving can be. Needless to say, there are some really thin parts and some really thick parts, but I can totally see why you guys love spinning so much! It's so much FUN!

I only managed pictures while she was still on the spindle, but as soon as she finishes drying, I'll post pictures of the finished product. Here she is, in all her awkward and newb-cake glory!

In all honesty, I wasn't really going for a consistent product. I was more of less getting a feel for the roving and a feel for the spindle, neither of which I'd ever handled before up until when I spun this. And now I'm eyeing the ball of remaining roving staring at me silently from the other side of the room!
6  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: My Party In A Bag and Aqua Dreamy Silk I got at the Fiber Festival this weekend on: September 23, 2008 02:32:29 PM
Oh man, that's aqua silk in just gorgeous! I could roll all over that. And it matches that scarf perfectly!

Party in a Bag just looks like good old-fashioned fun to me. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
7  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Completed Projects / Re: Natural dye and Crystal Light dye.. on: September 20, 2008 07:37:34 PM
Fondue and playing in dye? Why was I not invited?  Sad

Seriously though, it never occurred to me to use Crystal Light! It seems perfectly logical now; if Kool-Aid works, why not Crystal Light? One more thing to add to my ever-growing never-ended Crafty Shopping List.

That's some seriously pretty purple there, too!

Squee! Everything is so pretty!

I just want to squish it and roll on it like a kitty.  Cheesy

Says I as I sit here petting the 1 pound ball of merino roving freshly pulled from the mailbox. Now if only that bloody spindle would show up...

Now what dog wouldn't prefer fabric with skulls on it?   Grin

That dress is super cute! And of course your doggy is adorable.

And when I loaded that first picture, I instantly "Awwww!"-ed; I get that same look every morning, and it says "Pwease a biscuit?"

Such a handsome cat!

My cat would gnaw my fingers to bloody nubs if I even thought of putting him in clothes.
