31  The Witch's Spoon in Completed Projects by thisbirdsabsurd on: January 25, 2015 08:59:34 AM
I promise not to drown you in pictures of my latest passion for spoon carving...BUT...just one more.  Smiley
This is another spoon from the same downed beech tree.  This piece was a bit twisted and full of little knots (you can see one on the bowl that hopefully won't cause a problem.) But instead of chucking this piece as trash I decided to work with the wood and came up with this twisty, silly piece - my favorite one yet so I'm KEEPING it all to myself...thus, the name.  Wink

This is another creation for the Curiosity Swap.  Its made with an antique doll head mounted on a little bird body.  Beads are stitched on and the feet are polymer clay.  the feathers were donated by my African grey.  Wink

34  Spoon Carving! in Completed Projects by thisbirdsabsurd on: January 07, 2015 05:29:26 PM
If a tree falls in the woods, does it become a spoon?  Well in this case, yes.  A beech tree blew down last spring, and even though it was almost completely snapped in half, it grew all of its leaves in the following months.  I doubt it will come back again, but a tree with this much spirit deserves to be used for something other than fire wood!
I sawed off a thick branch and carried it home.  My weapons of choice were an axe, a knife and a hook knife.  The axe was to split the branch and hack it into a shape that somewhat resembled a spoon.  Then on to the knife to refine things a bit.  The hook knife was to scoop out the bowl of the spoon.  Some sand paper and oil and now that tree will live on in my kitchen.  A little wonky, but I love it!
Also, I only lost about a pint of blood on this project, so I think I did pretty well.  Wink

35  Snarky free motion pillow in Machine Embroidery: Completed Projects by thisbirdsabsurd on: September 14, 2014 10:49:18 AM
Pottermouth was my fabulous partner in the Snarky Housewives swap.  I really had a hard time coming up with something that made me happy but FINALLY had a bright idea.  The witticism was one that she had pinned, the design is my own.  Smiley. It's free motion machine embroidery which I've been experimenting with for the past year or so.  It's becoming one of my favorite things to do.  Smiley

36  Re: The Snarky Housewives Swap GALLERY in The Swap Gallery by thisbirdsabsurd on: September 09, 2014 06:02:38 AM
Okay, fingers crossed.....
I received a multi faceted snarky package from the lovely pottermouth!  Snarky AND fun?  What more could a girl ask for?  Check it out.

Ah-ha!  Did ya catch that?  The snarkisms change according to my mood!  There are several of them to choose from!  And check out these way too cute bits and pieces that adorn the table! . AND, the back is a little piece of art in and of itself!  Also you can get a better look at the wheel that turns to change the sayings.

Thanks for being such a fun partner pottermouth and thanks to Racky and cackle for coming up with another great swap idea!

37  Re: ART DOLLS 3 - GALLERY in The Swap Gallery by thisbirdsabsurd on: April 17, 2014 02:42:27 PM
Okay - brace yourself for awesomeness! Cmarion sent me the most fantastic Crow Goddess, guardian of baby birds, bunnies and small beings. She also protects seedlings so they can grow.  (Boy am I ever going to need her with the late spring we're having here!)
She came with a removable cloak (she only needs it for ceremonies) and a basket of seeds, a tiny skull and a scroll that tells all about her.  And look at the amazing staff.  Everything about her is so wonderful!  Thank you so much cmarion!!

That last one is a picture of my cat who was so enthralled with the Crow Goddess that I had a hard time taking pictures!!! Wink

38  Re: Art Dolls 3 - Send out Monday April 21, 2014 in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by thisbirdsabsurd on: April 14, 2014 06:20:48 AM
Whew, I finished today. We had our photo shoot out in the garden next to some lovely crocus and she posed like a pro. I will be sending Tuesday, as work has me running all over the state tomorrow. This has been an incredibly challenging swap. Of course, I made it challenging. Pushing myself to new heights.

Teaser photo:

I also finished a private swap I am behind on, and two of three quilt squares that are due soon. Now on to the next thing. Can't stop crafting!

Ohboyohboyohboy! !

39  Little Red and BBW in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by thisbirdsabsurd on: April 01, 2014 12:15:49 PM
So I made these for the Art Doll Swap.  Cmarion was my partner and since she said she likes dark/non Disney fairy tales I thought I'd go with the one that scared the crap out of me as a kid.  Smiley
I sketched them out on canvas and then "drew" them with free motion embroidery on the machine.  I added a little of the necessary RED with colored pencil.  I failed at making them stand on their own, but they can lean on each other quite well.  Smiley

40  My Big Bear in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by thisbirdsabsurd on: January 30, 2014 11:47:02 AM
So I bought a new house - out in the woods, which is heaven to me.  I'm moving in two weeks so of course I was inspired to take on a new project.  I had seen a bear print on wood that I liked a lot but they were sold out so...why not make my own?   I connected three boards - about 10" x 48" then painted and sanded to make sure the grain and knots showed through.  My present to me for my new woodsy house.  Smiley
