1  Paper Cutting ColdPlay Song.. in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by Craftsomnia on: February 02, 2011 07:09:08 PM
Hey Everyone -
Thought I would post a little project I did up for a friend, it is lyrics from a Coldplay song called Fix You - I drew up the art, used a cutter to cut out my work & put a swirly silver cardstock behind it.. I think it came out well...
Difficult to take pictures b/c of the glass though...
Thanks for looking!

2  Warm Process Soaping Experiment.. & Soap Stamp.. in Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects by Craftsomnia on: January 20, 2011 08:26:39 PM
Hey Everyone,
So I decided to try out the Warm Oven Process of Soaping instead of the CP.. I used just a basic normal recipe, but seem to have had unexpected results!.. Once the Oils & Lye came to a thin trace, I added a small amount of fragrance, colorant & herbs.. the fragrance was rather strong and only added a small amount (the kids thought I was baking something great!).. stirred it up again and it turned to a very soft ice cream texture, somewhat foldable.. so I quick dumped it in a mold - I know.. Plastic.. in the oven??.. well.. i did.. whoops!.. Just thought I would give it a try.  Really it did ok though!.. But after pouring the soap into the mold, it really set up quick and tapping it to get out air bubbles wasn't happening, so I tried to smooth with a spatula, which seemed to break open the top layer and expose a gooey under layer with lots of oils!.. yuck.  I gave it a few seconds of trying to make it pretty until realizing that wasn't working & put it in the warm 170 degree oven for the 2-3 hours as suggested... very soon there after I got the soda ash.. it did turn a somewhat transparent gel like color - I left it in for 12 hours.. checked on it but there was a bit of an oily section on the top and decided to let it sit for the night after warming the oven back up to temp.. by morning the oils did go away.. but the bars were still rather gooey on the underside.. but my impatience said.. "lets try and get it out of the mold".. I used a mold spray on it, which is used for plastic resin casting molds.. and the parts that were dry pulled right away from the mold.. the gooey parts wanted to hang on so I pulled it out by hand.. which is why the surface got so crazy looking.. should have waited a few days.. but who knows what would have happened.. after stacking it has seemed to dry up a good bit, but here and there i get some oil on the surface of the bars.. thinking something didn't go correctly with the recipe, tracing it.. not sure..
At any rate.. here are a few pictures.... has anyone else had a similar experience?

On another note.. I had been searching around for a soap stamp.. and I'm sure some of you know of a crafter stamp source - I must have emailed on a bad day or something asking kindly for services to be rendered.. didnt know fellow crafters could be so unpleasant!... well that did not go well, so I searched and searched.. and I must say I am extremely thrilled with the place that made this stamp.  I have absolutely no affiliation with them or it wouldn't have taken me so long to find them!.. But I sent in my black & white file, paid.. and the next day the stamp was sent, and received the next day.. wow!.. and soooo reasonably priced.. my stamp was  $37 mounted, the stamp is 1/4" magnesium with a wood block attachment - the edges of the letters are slightly beveled so it makes a nice letter & pops right out!  So if you're looking for a stamp I would check them out!.. 3  Butterfly Hat.. in Crochet: Completed Projects by Craftsomnia on: January 04, 2011 11:57:54 AM
I got this free pattern from ValliesKids blog website - it makes a little butterfly/bowtie design on the side.. very cute.. I made it in a 3-10 year old size.. but for some reason it turned out much larger than expected & fits an adult.. I did not use a regular yarn, instead I used a ball of Sugar & Cream.. maybe that is why..  Here is the end result!..

4  Ear Flap Aviator Hat.. in Crochet: Completed Projects by Craftsomnia on: January 04, 2011 10:43:50 AM
An aviator type had I made using Bernat Roving Yarn - in Rice Paper color.. I had not used the roving yarn before, it turned out to be sooo soft.. it crocheted up super quickly since it was chunky.. & used a J hook.. It is mostly all double crochet - then added on some triangle ear flaps & the flap on the front with stationary buttons.. also did a little raspberry color stitch around the hat for some color....

8  Tee's for the Troops.. Pillows in Crafty Charitable/Social Causes by Craftsomnia on: August 31, 2009 11:25:45 AM
So I saw a segment on the Nightly News the other night about a lady that sends pillows over to the troops.. and thought it would be something fun for the kids to make to keep them out of that summer boredom they love so much!.. Hubby loves those white t's.. and they are so soft and comfy.. but we have a huge pile of them b/c he wears them a few times and then they go on the "im done with them pile".. so why not up-cycle them!.. I screen printed flies on them.. dont know why we picked a fly.. but why not.. kept the fabric a double layer & sewed them.. the kids stuffed them real good and stitched the hole shut.. they'll be on their way to a troop over in Afghanistan tomorrow.. Hopefully to brighten their spirits!
