After buying a sewing machine, I needed somewhere to sew besides the dining room table! Not really wanting to buy anything, I cleaned off this old workbench that came with our basement:
It was way too tall to sit at, and incredibly rickety. Also, it was dirty and somewhat rotten. I cut the legs down to a more suitable height, made it more stable by adding extra support with some scrap lumber from my basement, filled in the most obvious holes with spackle, and painted the legs to make it look a little nicer. All the materials were already in my basement, so it cost me nothing.
Of course I also needed some storage nearby to hold thread, scissors, pens, ect. I had an old bookshelf that had outlived it's usefulness and decided to turn it into wall storage.
I removed the peaked top and base, turned it sideways, and stained it. Then I attached some fabric to the back that matches my carpet.
My neighbor gave me the stain and wall hanging hooks, so all I had to buy was the fabric.
Here's the final product:
Now I have a place to work and it cost only $3!
