21  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Fibre Swap # whatever on: March 12, 2014 10:42:27 AM
We haven't done a fibre swap in a while.  Anyone up for something like that?  This may be cost prohibitive, but I wondered if we all sent a ziplock sandwich bag of fibre to each other (maybe to max of 4 people? or we could group it up how ever)  and keep one to ourselves, then we all mix and spin as we see fit, then share our creations?  Otherwise, a simple 3 point straight up fibre for fibre swap might be fun.

22  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Affirmation Book for the Affirmation swap! on: March 04, 2014 01:30:35 PM

Untitled by SpinHeartSpin, on Flickr

Kittykill hosted the best swap, the Affirmation swap in January/february of this year. I made my partner (vgnmom) a whole book of affirmations!  I water-colour painted some card stock (would way have preferred water colour paper, but, everywhere I went in town had nothing but card stock!!) folded them just so, cut out the windows, and printed off a bunch of affirmations. Once I'd inserted them into the windows, I noticed it looked unfinished, so I bravely set at the frames with my sharpie marker.  I think the results speak for them selves. I was pretty happy with them!  I used coptic stitch binding to hold them all together, adding a few beads for a little bit of blingy sparkle.

Here are all the pages:

Once I bound it, it looked kind of pretty just sitting there.

An off shoot of this project, that a few of also made it into that swap package (and a few other swap packages) were this little affirmation windows. Just tiny little pocket sized pick-me-ups!

Thanks for sticking through it all! that was a lot of pictures. Cheesy
23  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Hand spun, Hand braided wrist distaff on: March 02, 2014 07:47:33 PM
One of the modules for my Level 3 master spinner course asks that I spin a cable plied yarn, and turn some of it into a wrist distaff. As i had mentioned in the 28th of February Fiber Friday, this yarn took me all day to make 40 yards. I did not end up needing 40 yards, but it's always better to have more then enough, isn't it?

How it looks on a human wrist:

Method:  I took 3- 5 foot lengths of the yarn, and braided them in the center. From there I had 6 (more or less) equal lengths of yarn to braid.  I used this flat braid (method 2) tutorial for about 6.5 inches and switched to this round 6 strand braid tutorial for about 7 inches.  I added a bead, and tied some knots, and voila. done.  It took significantly less time to braid this thing then it did to spin the required yarn.  But I can check that one off my list! Hurray!

Horray! spun yarn!

This is approximately 40 yards of cable plied shetland wool. It took me ALL DAY. No word of a lie, ALL DAY.  Any minute between waking up, feeding kids and self and going to bed was spent spinning this yarn on Monday. It was ridiculous. But it's done.  And it was homework, so I had no choice but to finish it.

And this one is a small sample of boucle, with handspun silk singles as the base and binder, and gotland as the boucle.

And that's about it for me this week.   What have you been up to?
25  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Fiber Friday February 21, 2014 on: February 21, 2014 05:00:25 PM
Woohooo! Fibre Friday!
Big skein! 100% merino- Unspun Single. For this you beat the ever living snot out of your single while washing it, let it dry and take the twist out. It's interesting, but makes the most yummy swatch! It's white and black and pink, but there's not been much sun lately, so my pictures are crappy.

Little pile of coreless core spun, in the same colorway

(Another terribad photo... I wish the sun would come out!!) Homework! One module for the Master Spinners level 3 course asks for novelty yarn! hurray! less monotony!  These are my attempts, only one is a success. (balance, and achieving the affect I was aiming for)

Some more homework. Skein for outerwear. 3 ply woollen spun, merino wool

And I finally had success re-creating a commercial yarn (or at least as close as I"m going to get, and I'm happy with it.)

A galactic batt, inspired by all those pretty pictures of galaxies far far away. It has merino, silk, holographic sparkle and glow in the dark fibres

And finally.... (thanks for keeping up til the end!!)
My Module 2 - Road of Trials - Journey to the Golden Fleece Fibre Creativity course - This was fun to come up with. I won't bore you all with the words right now. But here's the picture.  It's not finished. it to ally need to be set and blocked, but It's all spun so I'm sharing it now.

And that's what I've been doing. And I've been getting calf cramps at night from spinning so much.. lol
26  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Cabled chunky cowl from Handspun on: February 20, 2014 06:32:21 AM
I made this cowl for a friend as a trade in services, she made me something I can't make, and I made her something she can't make! win/win!
I've shared the handspun yarn here
Here's the finished cowl:

And here it is on me, so you can see just how chunky it is!!

Late start, but better then never, right?

Nothing of great yardage, but I'm on my pre Fibre Week panic to get all my homework done.  So it's mostly going to be mini skeins for a while.

Let's start with the "recreate a commercial yarn" homework.
Here's the first attempt (with the commercial yarn beside):

Untitled by SpinHeartSpin, on Flickr

And the subsequent attempts. 4 in total, and I've not done it yet. It's harder then it should be!

A couple blends, just because we need to do some blends to prove we learned something in level 2 (or so I assume.)

and I've gone crazy and thought to make a sweater, and I don't think my yarn is as thick as I thought it was. But while I've shared it before, it's in ball form, and makes a pretty picture.

Anyone else been up to any yarn fun?

And this is my Journey to the Golden Fleece Fiber Creativity course Module 1 yarn.  It's pretty personal, so I'm just going to give ya the picture.  It's not long, but a brief synopsis of technique would go as follows:  one N-plied blue silk single, 'candy cane' plied with variegated purple crochet cotton  (you may or may not be able to find that out there on the webs... It may be a secret Journey technique) then, a core is added, and the blue silk becomes just a single and the purple continues along too. Teased Mohair locks are then added to cover the core four about 8 yards or so.  The purple and blue disappear on occasion, under the black/silver mohair locks.  At nearly the end, a big pink slub, and the pink core and purple thread, and blue silk is all twisted together.

If you are interested in the Journey to the Golden fleece course, Suzy and Arlene are opening sign ups for a second running TOMORROW!!  Go here to join the journey!

What have you guys been up to lately?

Three in a row! can we keep it going?!  Grin

So, this is the corriedale, which I'd thought I'd ordered a pound of... But it was like just shy of 14 oz.  I"m going to have to double check, and message the folks it came from.  Hopefully it will be enough yarn for the cowl I'm knitting from it.  I did a test swatch on size 15's and it's LOVELY knit up.

Here is the fluff, just because it's nice to look at fluff Wink  It's nothing special, but taking it from meh, to WOW is the best feeling Smiley

What else is going on in the spinning world today?
