as for the sponsoring a child, I've kind of been holding out until my son was old enough to understand it. He's almost 4, and I think he'll get it now. That might sound a tad selfish maybe, but I want him to be in on it. It think it will teach him some more empathy, and to realize the world is just so big, yet so small that we can make a difference!

I think it's wonderful you want to involve your son, kids understand more than we think. It's a great lesson. In my family when I was little, the charity that my parents had me take part in was a Christmas hamper project each year. We'd pick out an outfit and a toy for a child. I understood it then, and I'm sure your child will understand too. And I'm sure he'll be very excited to have a friend to write letters and send drawings to.
We need to start some sort of charitable tradition as a family and I think this might be a good one. I do loads of charitable things, but my son doesn't know it. he needs to learn early, That way it will stick.
christmas hampers are a good idea too!
