And I have lots of fiber sitting ready to be dyed, but my inspiration is lacking....

I have tons of roving (okay, really only about 15 lbs) that I need to weigh and dye before next month ....  was inspired Sat night when I dyed my hair  (reddish brown on top and black on bottom).  Took the left over hair dye and went to town on about 8 oz of roving.

With alpaca, try blending it with a touch of wool, like merino.  Definitely needs more twist and all the advise you've been given has been good!

Its good to hear someone's been hit by inspiration!  i'm just waiting for mine LOL

That last part makes me go  Cheesy... Yay to hear from you that I gave good advice!!!!!!  that means I'm learning something! wooo!

great job!  Gratz on your win!
question though, why did you mix your food coloring with vodka instead of water?  Does it give a special effect or does it dry more quickly?  Whats the reason?  i've just always used water if I want to paint my cakes..... let me know!  if it works better I'll be using that instead!

Do  you spin on a wheel?   next go at thin yarn, try a lower ratio (like not the biggest whorl, but the smaller ones)  and (if its a singledrive) Adjust the break band so you get a slower intake.  (if it's a double drive, I have no idea.. i don't have one of those.)
If you are using a spindle, try a lighter spindle and get more twist into it... I think that would help.
this is my newb advice though... still by no means an expert here LOL  I spin by trial and error....

Speaking of thin yarns though,  Oddacity, you gave me the push I needed to try a smaller whorl on my Traveler.  It works!  LOL!!! i started spining the pink/yellow/orange and I think I'll have nice yarn for a pair of baby booties....  only problem is I still don't know if I'm having a girl LOL!!!

what horror stories about RIT?  I've used it on roving when it was all I could get, seemed to work fine......
And to the kool-aid question, I think it would make your wool sticky.  but maybe if you rinse it out enough, it may be fine.....  Can't be anymore helpfull there, but you could try it out on like 1/2 an ounce of roving,  and se what happens. Smiley  don't know a thing about the gatorade mixes... I honestly don't think I've ever noticed them before....
