1  Wanting to paint my kitchen cabinets, need suggestions! in Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions by TwilightFirefly on: August 22, 2009 03:25:20 PM
Ok! So I like my kitchen, but the cabinets are ugly. I think with some paint and new hardware (and hopefully, eventually, a new countertop) they could look really nice.

This is what they look like right now (pardon my mess!):

Right now the doors are wooden with some kind of slightly glossy finish, the base is painted cream and the backsplash is white-ish tile. Outdated hardware and the laminate countertop is kind of grayish-purple. Clearly these cabinets are from the 1950's when the house was built! Time to update on a budget!

The walls in the kitchen are currently cream with the exception of an accent wall on the opposite side of the room (where the table is) that is a burnt-orange color:

I'm not quite sure what would be the best color to paint the cabinets. The little cabinet by the table would likely get painted the same color as the others. Something that would flow with the wall I already have painted but still be neutral enough that I wouldn't have to re-paint the cabinets again if we decide to sell the house in the future.  I know it will be a big job and I would really like to just do it once.

I would really like to hear some suggestions! I know several people here have posted their own re-painted cabinets and they all look great!

Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

2  Curious Curio Hutch! (w/ pics) in Interior Decorating: Completed Projects by TwilightFirefly on: February 13, 2009 08:47:31 PM
Wow I haven't been here in a while! My husband and I have recently married, bought our first home, moved to a new town, and started new jobs...which unfortunately has left little time for crafting!

Unpacking, painting different rooms, planning for improvements and trying to figure out what we want to do/can afford for new flooring has really been more of a challenge than I expected. Which translates into slow progress in all of those areas. In order to feel like I am slowly but surely accomplishing the things I want to do with my home, I have taken the approach of enjoying small victories.

My most recent is putting up a china hutch/curio cabinet because I felt awful that our lovely wedding china was being kept in boxes where nobody could see it. Now this was a challenge for me because I wanted to display our china in a way that didn't clash with our taste in decor, which is I guess I would describe as "relaxed Asian-eclectic". I thought a very formal, traditional display would look sort of odd. I took my inspiration from a decorating tip I read somewhere that suggested displaying fine china "casually" to mix things up a little.

So without further rambling, this is what I came up with:

Close-ups:

I had a lot of fun arranging the pieces, and I like how it turned out, but I would really like to hear what other people have to say. Is it a little funky and unique, or just downright weird? Cute and whimsical or a disgrace to china cabinets? I just don't want to be accidentally breaking some huge unspoken rule about how china should be displayed. Hit me!

3  Please help! Too blue bathroom! in Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions by TwilightFirefly on: October 21, 2008 09:15:35 AM
Hello!

My husband and I are in the process of buying our first home. Being a person who enjoys crafting, I tend to see things for what they could be rather than just what they are.

However, the home we're buying is giving me a challenge:

I know this is not the greatest picture, but at the moment it is all I have. The main problem with this bathroom is that the bathtub, toilet and sink are all BLUE. The walls are a different blue. There is a birdhouse wallpaper border in an even different blue that also has to go. And the floor is beige laminate.

Updating this bathroom would be easy if we had a ton of money, but we don't. I just feel depressed when I see all that blue. I know that we could paint the walls, but what about the hideous matching blue bathroom ...furniture? I would love some ideas on how I could make the bathroom look nicer while keeping the blue sink, toilet and tub. Or if anyone has experience re-enameling those items, how expensive was it and did it look nice in the end?

I really appreciate any ideas you can throw my way!
