21  4 foot caterpillar. needs name. in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by rachelyra on: August 15, 2005 12:45:53 AM
I ended up with a metric buttload of stuffing from work, and so i decided i needed to make something huge and stuffed.  I've only used half of it so far.  (couch photos included for a sense of scale)

ohhh, it's lovely, valoir.

i'm down to squinchy details on the reconstructive part:

i'm having a devil of a time getting the seam between bodice and skirt right.  almost there - and we got an iron from the bridal shower in time for me to press the thing.  my mother's making me a petticoat.

embroidery:

chug chug chug.  your dress is lovely, valoir, but i am most of all jealous of the fact that it is DONE.

silly me!

I'm nearly done now with the embroidery/beading around the hem (those pictures are a few weeks out of date)  and in a week or so will start the two or three most elaborate pieces, around the waistline.

i have to confess that i chose that picture over one that showed my hair a little better because i love that picture.  We had a photo shoot with a friend of ours, which was tons of fun - and now we have a bunch of cute pictures of us.

here is one that shows my hair a little better:

I think my hair's been pretty much every color of the rainbow, and that i've used every imaginable method from kool-aid to food coloring to about ten different brands of dye.  I don't have many pictures, and none online, but lately i've been putting in wool dreads.

I made and put in new dreads in the last few days.  i have a big pile stilll left - most will go in a fall, but i think a few more will go on my head.

I have started doing the beading/embroidery on the dress.  No, it's not entirely reconstructed yet.  that was on hold for the grommet set, which came in the mail today.

oooookay, plan C.

so my grandma mailed me her wedding dress.  it came today, smelling of mothballs and the sea.

it's about an inch, inch and a half too small in the waist.  gonna have to figure something out.  maybe lacing?  fabric insert?  (that could be something trying to be similar [although matching fifty-year-old lace will be impossible, i reckon] or something contrasty.)

i'm thinking about taking off the tulle:

and doing some embroidery on the underskirt (which would then be just the skirt, i guess).  if i do this, i can incorporate the bodice insert into some sort of grand scheme that may end up making some kind of visual sense.

oh, also, it came with this jacket, which i simultaneously like and dislike.  It fits strangely in this picture because the dress isn't zipped all the way up.  maybe i could scavenge some lace from it to help with the bodice alterations.

hee... thanks, guys.  it's a paper parasol, although the paper is surprisingly sturdy - there were a million parasols everywhere in my house for a while, and i kept running into them because i'm clumsy - but none of them broke!  It's mostly acrylics.  the colors are liquitex, the squirty kind in the jars.  The black is japanese ink (i loooove painting with ink), and some intereference gold mixed in - this is the gold stuff you can kinda see.  it changes color depending on how you look at it.

here is a small close-up, from near the top.  it's not the prettiest part, but it's the part where i included a secret pair of underpants.
