11  Pandora's Trunk: funky warehouse trunk show in SF 3/26 in California: Central by rachelyra on: March 11, 2006 10:15:25 AM
I'm throwing my first ever trunk show and am really excited about the lineup of people that will be there.  Massage, spa, chocolate truffles in addition to handmade crafty goods.  A violin serenade!  It should be a fun scene even without buying anything and I encourage any of you who are interested to come by and check out my house and the stuff I'm cramming into it.

12  Re: come one! come all! post pics of your tattoos! in Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects by rachelyra on: February 26, 2006 07:21:15 PM
Hokay,  here is a phone cam pic of my still-healing tattoo from the party i had at my house last night.

the heart is inspired by the scultpor Lee Bontecou (whose story is really interesting, for those who care.

http://www.utdallas.edu/~mel024000/images/Bontecou.jpg

the idea of the coyote-jaw crown came from a Richard Brautigan story called The Salt Creek Coyotes which you can read here if you scroll almost all the way down:

I'll post finished, healed photos later.

13  115 Gallon Anole Terrarium in Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects by rachelyra on: February 12, 2006 11:44:06 PM
there are only three lizards in it right now - they are the hardy pioneers, the ones forging the way and risking their necks for the ones to come.  most kinks are worked out, and i am waiting for a shipment to my pet shop to get some more.  Eventually i will have 10-12 in there.  I'm hoping they make babies.

the lizards are anoles.
you can read lots of good info about anoles here:
http://www.anapsid.org/
they are pretty small, and a little shy.  they change color, through a range of greens and browns.

the plants are mostly from the grocery store run by asian people on my way home from work - i'm not really sure what many of them are, but most of them are faring well.  the ivy is growing visibly from day to day.  the stuff on the second tier is not doing so hot; one of the cactuses is a goner for sure.
the bromeliad up above i got from a fancy-pants plant store.  it's blooming for the second time now.

there are two ports in the lid of the tank where i pour water into a drip system i made.  i feed them mostly crickets, although this weekend i went to the pet store and came home with a backpack full of several different kinds of bugs.  They've all been laying about fat and contented ever since.  i've become a bugkeeper in addition to a lizardkeeper, but i'm pretty pleased with my setup.

this is the smaller of my two males.  he's always a little sad because the one chick in the tank doesn't want to be his girlfriend.  The two males had some chest-thumping early on but this one seems to have settled down into a secondary role.

His name is Hedwig because he has a stripe down his back, which typically is only seen in females or juveniles.  When I first got them I saw him do his display a bunch of times.  What they do when they display:  they have a flap of skin on their throat called a dewlap.  He'll stick it out and bob his head up and down (kind of like he's doing push-ups).  They'll do it to each other in anger, or to a female to attract her attention.  I saw Hedwig do it repeatedly to his reflection in the gazing ball, and i swear once or twice he did it to me.

14  Stuffed bird, larger than the kid it's for will be for years. in Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies by rachelyra on: October 11, 2005 11:31:17 PM
I kind of like the idea of my incipient niece having a stuffed animal that she can climb over and nap on.  The blue fabric is a really great chinese silk brocade.  The white's an old pair of pants.

15  Big painting on glass, painted mannequin, small paintings on board. Many .jpgs in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by rachelyra on: October 11, 2005 11:16:06 PM
This is one of a pair of doors that I found on the street half a dozen blocks from my house.  I drew a quick sketch on the front in grease pencil, painted black lines in first on the back, and went from there with colors.  If you look closely, you can see that the windows in the submarine and in the skyship are open - left totally unpainted.  light should come through them once i hang the doors.  everywhere else has umpteen million coats of paint.

This mannequin has been an off and on pain in the butt for ages now.  I'm planning on suspending her from the cieling, soon.

The first one I finished a while ago, the second one just recently.  They are both paintings that i've had trouble telling when they're done.  I may yet go back and do more work on the second.  Anyone know who the painter was (he painted something dark called "The King") who said that we don't really finish paintings, just give up on them?

16  Space Pirate costume - real skulls. big pictures. in Halloween Costumes by rachelyra on: October 11, 2005 11:03:19 PM
I got this jacket at an opera costume sale.  i did all of the ridiculous embellishment - they are real mouse skulls.  i ordered them on the internet and sturdied them up with hot glue.  The glass on the back is a bunch of pipettes (lab glass).
