1  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: what the @#$%!!! does this mean???? on: February 25, 2005 05:22:05 PM
Google (and, I assume, yahoo) operate by "crawling" the web - given a web page, they read that one and store it in their index, then follow all the links from that page and index them, etc for all the pages on the web (well, that's the hope). Since this is a huge job, they only update the indexes you get search results from every few months. So it can take a while, sometimes months, to show up on google. Also remember that even if you're in the index, you won't always show up first in the results.. or even in the first ten pages.

That stuff about dynamic and static links is certainly a bit cryptic to be left out for non-geeks to read. They're talking about how your pages link to other pages, in your site or out on the web. A "static" link is probably all you're using .. they look like
Code:
<a href="http://lalala.com/a_page.htm"l>link to a page</a>
in your html file. A dynamic link is a different beast, that is created by scripts in a web page. Since google's crawling program (a "robot", since it's not a person i guess) doesn't know how to use scripts in web pages, it can't follow dynamic links and so can't index pages that are only linked to that way. I don't think you have to worry about this; if you were using any dynamic stuff you would know about it. Just wait a little while longer for the new index to be used.

To make your web page show up for searches, make sure you are linked to from lots of related places - maybe put your site's address in your craftster signature? (discretely, please Smiley

I don't know if that helps, let me know.

What's your site, and how are you searching for it?

It's either a hot potato or a big poop. Either way, good stuff Smiley

I love the web. I'm so going to ask this person if I can copy them, as soon as I learn to speak german.

Here's the link: http://www.heise.de/ct/machflott/projekte/56018

4  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Re: Film Negatives on: December 08, 2004 08:22:00 PM
Two strips next to each other is the exact width of an ATC...

. o O ( The width of an Air Traffic Controller?  )

I use old film as registration aids in screenprinting. They hold a folded edge very well, and stick to tape pretty good too. So I fold single frame sized bits in half, taping one half down to my printing surface and letting the other half jut up from the table at a sharp angle. If you set up two of these (one for the right or left side, on for the bottom) you can position your paper accurately on every pull.

(that assumes a lot of things about your printing set up (ie, that it's exactly like mine), but you get the idea I hope!)

Wow, Saskatooners on the web! I too would like to hear more about the knitting group -- i'd like to learn but don't know anyone who can teach me.
I do other things though, like making clocks, screenprinting tshirts, and buttons (badges) ..
Saskatoon people, wake up! we need a craft gathering of some sort that doesn't include gluing twigs into toilet paper holders.
