There is also Threadneedle Fabric in Essex Junction.  I took a beginning sewing classes there and to be honest I can't remember what the fabric selection was like, but it might be a good source.

What area of the state are you in?  I have also been trying to learn to use my sewing machine / read patterns.  I took a class at Threadneedle Fabrics in Essex Junction and it was pretty helpful in getting started.
