11  Bright and Cheery Baby Quilt in Quilting: Completed Projects by amalgam on: April 15, 2012 11:28:46 PM
I was invited to a baby shower that happened a couple of days ago. And because I have more time than money, I made this quilt.

It's just about 24 square inches and was made completely from my fabric stash. The middle is a batik scarf I got from Hobby Lobby years ago. Then I just found bright colors that I thought looked nice together. This is the back:

It's sort of a wonky log cabin design. I just kept adding fabric around the pink square in the middle until it was big enough. I'm still too much of a wuss to do real binding, so I made sure that the gold borders were wide enough to wrap around to the front so I could self-bind. I was late to the baby shower, but I got there in time for her to see it, finished, when she opened presents.Smiley

12  4x6 Ticker Tape Quilt in Quilting: Completed Projects by amalgam on: April 15, 2012 11:19:58 PM
I finished the 4x6 Art Swap a week or two ago and this is what I made:

And here is the back:

Sorry that the pictures are a little blurry, but you get the idea. I used this tutorial to make it:
http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2009/10/scrap-buster-project-tiny-ticker-tape-quilt-tutorial-from-amanda-jean/

I sewed too close to the edge, so instead of a binding, I satin-stitched around the edges by hand using variegated perle cotton. I really enjoyed the ticker tape process, so I can't wait to do this for a larger project.Smiley

13  Re: 4x6 Art swap Gallery of Greatness! in The Swap Gallery by amalgam on: April 15, 2012 11:09:23 PM
It looks like my partner got swept up in life and couldn't post a picture of what I sent. So, I'll just do it myself.Cheesy

I had been wanting to try this "ticker tape" quilting technique for awhile and this was the perfect chance to do it. I layered fabric with batting in the middle for the "quilt sandwich", then sewed on small bits of different fabric to the top. After that, I satin-stitched around the edges by hand with variegated perle cotton. Here's the back:

I received! Check it out!

And here's a little self portrait of the artist.

It got a little crumpled in the mail, but the skill shines through. I just need to go digging for a frame. I have to get this up on the wall.Cheesy

As promised, here are pics of what Audania1 sent me.Smiley I told her that I've been drinking a lot of tea lately, so she made me a tea wallet.

The outside fabric represents Rue.

The inside fabric represents Katniss.

Now here's what really blew me away:

I'm collecting button tree hoops so incorporated that into this Hanging Tree hoop. The use of twisted fabric and the different buttons are so cool!

Here are some closeups:

She even added a couple of nooses for extra effect. You really went above and beyond Audania1. Cheesy

17  Re: 12 Quilt Projects in 2012 Along in Craftalongs by amalgam on: March 19, 2012 01:24:56 AM
Wow! So many wonderful projects are getting done.Smiley And I'm so glad that I can finally be counted in that number. I finished the first three quilts on my list!:D

All I had was my Iphone to take pictures with. Two are about 40x60. I just used Princess and the Frog Novelty fabric on one side and a coordinating fabric on the other side. The smaller quilt is about three feet square. I used the leftover princess and coordinating fabrics to make it. The back of each quilt has a strip of white fabric with the name of one of my cousins written in fabric marker. I can finally update my list!

1. Quilt for cousin #1 Done:3/18
2. Quilt for cousin #2 Done:3/18
3. Quilt for cousin #3 Done:3/18
4. Red, brown, and yellow quilt for grandmother
5. Emergency quilt for the car
6. Quilt for the couch
7. Spring wall quilt
8. Summer wall quilt
9. Autumn wall quilt
10. Winter wall quilt
11. Linus Project quilt
12. Quilt-as-you-go quilt

I'm not sure which quilt I want to work on next. I think I'll aim for #5 or #11.Smiley

20  Among the Fireworks in Needlework: Completed Projects by amalgam on: March 09, 2012 01:29:27 PM
I made this for Round 7 of the Embroidery Hoopla. I decided to do a hoop using negative space and this is what I came up with.

I liked the idea of a geisha out watching fireworks. I outlined the silhouette in backstitch as a guide. Then I did running stitches to make the fireworks.

Here's a close-up. Something my camera rarely let's me do, even if it is a bit blurry.Tongue
