1  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 49 ENTRIES / vegan sarah silverman fresh pasta portrait on: April 07, 2010 06:22:01 PM

i wanted to make my own pasta for several reasons.
mainly because i was intrigued. but i am also a broke student.
and i always make things too complicated when i want to start something new.

anywho, i wanted to make a portrait of one of my heroes in her younger years.
i wanted it to be kinda kitsch, but not too insane to hang on my wall.

i started by making the dough, and adding food coloring.
then i just started sculpting after this image that i found in the internets.

i was waaay to detailed when i started.

it took for ever (eight hours).

oh noes! it's cracking... Cry

live and learn. i had to keep spraying it with water to keep it moist enough to sculpt.
in the end, it was very unevenly dry. that's probably why it cracked on me.

i'm thinking of putting some varnish or something to give it a glossy look.
right now it looks kinda fugly up close. i think i will keep squinting at it.

thank you for looking!

thankful for pointers/comments
2  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / "the big bang theory" fan art embroidery on: February 07, 2010 12:01:55 PM
my friend was going away for six moths, so i thought i'd give her something to hold if she gets home sick.

the result is the soft kitty pillow case.
it was the first time i attempted embroidery since first grade,
so the outcome has a bit of "personal charm" to it. heh.

i actually used that frame type thingy, but i still managed to mess it up.
i guess practice makes perfect.
(discipline couldn't hurt either.)

3  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 47 ENTRIES / embroidered bread bag on: February 07, 2010 06:48:04 AM
hi all! this is my first entry, though i have been lurking about for a few years.

i had this bread wrapping at home, and i wanted to use it for something.
when this challenge came along, i thought i'd try  to do something with it.

i also had two pairs of shorts that i was getting rid of.

i decided to use the sturdier pair, and started dissecting it.

i covered the printed paper with adhesive plastic, and cut away the part that i didn't
want to use in this project.

after sewing the dissected shorts together the way i wanted them,
i attached the printed paper.

then i embroidered along some of the lines.

i made the lining out of an old blouse i was getting rid of.

to protect my groceries from the snow, i cut up an old bicycle inner tube that i found next to a dumpster, and the glued it together.

i cut out a piece of cardboard for the bottom and used it as a guide for inner tube.

i used glue and scissors to shape the inner tube.
then i sewed it on using the sewing machine.

i made shoulder straps from leftover fabric.
i decided i wanted to be able to close the pockets in the front,
so i made little straps for them.

i also added a few stitches to keep them from opening to easily.

i covered the buttons in red fabric that i had lying around.

i thought something was missing still, so i embroidered some details with yarn i had laying around.
i had to use pliers tough!

i broke three needles for the machine and one thick ordinary needle.
i also stabbed myself in the hand. small sacrifice to the craft gods.

at last i added the lining. (there are two pockets in there)

i like that it is so deep, that there are many pockets,
and that i can get the straps across my chest for heavy loads.

english is not my mother tongue, so please be kind Smiley
