I am SO excited to be able to post this. For the FIRST time in my career in this craftalong I am able to turn in an OWL. This year has been a remarkable year for me in the terms of productivity and general life functioning. A little over a year ago I began treatment for narcolepsy and slowly everything in my life began to change. I am able to complete more complicated projects and make progress in my art and music that I've never been able to make before. Anyway, my ability to focus on larger projects that may take more than one sitting to complete has drastically improved. It's no secret that ErinAquaheart and I have gone through some trying times over the years that we have been participating, and this community has really helped keep us going through many, many challenges in life.

~*COMPLETED OWL*~
OWL Subject & Option (if available): Muggle Studies
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Muggle Fairy tale Art Toy Series

Over all of the time that I have had to work on this I have gone through several incarnations of my concept. I originally saw myself working with a wider variety of materials, including an original cast resin edition, and some vinyl figures, but our circumstances being what they are when it came down to execution I had to stick with the materials I had on hand, therefore all of my pieces are folk dolls. I did however focus on trying to explore different techniques involving textiles. With The Cowardly lion I saw what it was like to just draw on fabric like I would on paper and I attempted to give him a sort of sketchy look like he was a doodle come to life. With the lion I Also explored painting with dyes instead of thicker paint, but I also used some dimensional paint and some glow in the dark paint. I then experimented with stitching to create a pattern on him. I'm pretty happy with how he tuned out. He is around 12x18 inches. With Glinda, I wanted to definitely come up with my own concept for her; maintaining her identity as a character without ripping off other designs. With her I tried out thicker paint on the fabric and went for a more illustrative quality to the drawing than I did with the lion. I added texture by crocheting layers of lace for the bottom of her skirt.

Here's my preliminary sketch for Glinda: you can see how she changed as I went along.

I wanted to make sure I covered two different time periods so for my next group of them I chose Snow White and Rose Red. I wanted the look of these to be more stylized and minimal in contrast to the sort of blingy Wizard of Oz ones. To achieve this I went with print carving. I had so much fun carving the print blocks that it inspired me to use more print making techniques in a wide range of art. The ink came out a little lighter than I anticipated on the fabric but I kept it because I liked how ghost like they looked, but if I were making a play set for a child or to be handled by many people I would find a different ink.

Above I showed the process of drawing the design, carving the blocks, and the test prints, Which I was so happy with. I really can't wait to use my carved blocks with other things. And here are my little folk dolls:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Divination
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Koi Pond Easter Egg ATC, This project fits the assignment because of the suit of cups being associated with the element of water.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Herbology
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Court Jester Easter Egg ATC, This project fits the assignment because you know an Easter egg that looks like that is bound to contain a joke or two!

Class/Challenge/House Pride: History of Magic
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Art Easter Egg Hunt ATCs, These fit the assignment because one way to make your class work more exciting is to make a game out of it and give yourself something to hunt for in the material. These are some of he ATCs that I made for an "Easter egg hunt" Where I randomly hid ATCs of easter eggs around my town for people to find. This was one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences I have had with my creative projects in a long time!

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Muggle Studies
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Sci Fi Alien Creature Easter Egg ATC, This project fits the assignment because it represents an egg that some kind of fantastical creature would hatch from that would be found on a world or a different time period that would be depicted in a Sci Fi movie.

Class/Challenge/House Pride:Study of Ancient Runes
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Spiky Sound Machine Painting Series, This project fits the assignment of exploring personal sigils because in these paintings I have explored bright color, sound, and the energy of creating and sharing in the creation of self expression. I have always felt that bright colors, music, and the energy shared when people get together in a group to experience art or music, are things that represent who I am and are parts of who I am. I chose an abstract visual vocabulary to create these paintings so that they could look like runes or symbols that communicate an experience.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Transfiguration
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Easter Egg ATC's These fit the assignment because they got large results from minimal supplies. All they took were some left over watercolor paper scraps and some watercolors to create many bold and colorful paintings that were then shared with many people through an art abandonment easter egg hunt.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: March Detention
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Skin Cell Abstraction Painting, This fits in to the March Prompt because I have been working on accumulating panels for this large work over time, so its kind of always a new project and a WIP at the same time. In this picture it is the fourth one in the bottom right corner. I posted the picture of all of them because I have posted several of these and I wanted to show that the are indeed all separate paintings.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Head Mistress Challenge + SPEW
SPEW: SPEW
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Elephant Painting Collection for baby's room, one elephant painting that was left for an expectant or new mother at planned parenthood. What better symbol for fertility is there than a new baby, or a gift for that new baby. Also I messed up on the green one for some reason I made the belly line different than the other two so I made one that matched and kept the odd one out and left it in the lobby of planned parenthood for a low income mother to have for her baby, making it a SPEW project.

And the SPEW one:

It's been a little while since I have been around the castle, but I have been a very busy Slytherin:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Apparition
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Robot Easter Egg ATC, This project fits the assignment because Easter egg hunts are always fun and make people happy, and robots are also fun and make people happy. Little whimsies like these make life more comfortable because they break up the monotony.

Class/Challenge/House Pride:Arithmancy
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Circus Seal Easter Egg ATC This project fits the assignment because it substitutes an art egg for a real egg in an easter egg hunt. It also substitutes an artistic representation of circus colors and a cute seal for a real animal being exploited by a circus leaving all of the cute but none of the abuse.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Defense Against The Dark Arts
SPEW:
House:Slytherin
Project Name: National Poetry Month poem and illustrations. This project fits the assignment because I have always wanted to write more and be a better writer but I have been afraid to let my words come out on paper because I felt self conscious about them. I have been using this month (National Poetry Month) to help myself get over my fears by writing and even reading in public as much of my own poetry as possible. I have had a great experience this month with writing more than I have in a long time and finding ways to share it with the world while making no judgements on myself.

ooh! Calliemae, I absolutely adore that Orca!!

Ok SO, I ave a lot of things to turn in and a lot of them go in sets so I am going to post the pictures of the sets first and then identify which one in each set is for the class I am posting.

Here are the pics:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Alchemy
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Rite of Life painting (Top Left Corner of the four piece set) This project fits the assignment because it represents my philosophical fire. This is part of a large collection of art that I am working on inspired by getting in touch with the basic building blocks of life: Cells. When they are viewed under a microscope each different type of tissue has a visual rhythm and vitality to it. I find that very inspiring as a way to explore what my own visual vitality and rhythm looks like.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Astronomy
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Rite of Life painting (Second one on the top of the set of four.) This fits the assignment because there are 5 overlapping rectangles and the paining includes pale yellow.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Care of Magical Creatures
SPEW:
House:Slytherin
Project Name: Rite of Life painting (first one on the bottom of the set of four) This fits the assignment because it contains the colors green and gold.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Charms
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Rite of Life painting (second one on the bottom of the set of four) This painting fits the project because it has leaves and very plant oriented colors.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Flying
SPEW:
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Sock Monster. This fits the assignment because my monster has three eyes that are made of 6 buttons.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: House Pride
SPEW: (If your item is for charity, enter that here; if not leave blank or add n/a.)
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Rite of Life painting (top one on the set of three) This fits the assignment because there is lots of green and black for Slytherin in the painting.

Class/Challenge/House Pride:House Unity
SPEW: (If your item is for charity, enter that here; if not leave blank or add n/a.)
House: Slytherin
Project Name:  Rite of Life painting second in the three. This fits the assignment because it has a representation of the basic building blocks that unify life, cells, we can learn to work in harmony among the houses by the metaphor of different types of cells working together to bring life to the organism.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Floo powder Argentina
SPEW: (If your item is for charity, enter that here; if not leave blank or add n/a.)
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Native Plants and Textiles painting. This painting showcases some native plants and some native textile patterns of Argentina.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Head Mistress Challenge March
SPEW: (If your item is for charity, enter that here; if not leave blank or add n/a.)
House: Slytherin
Project Name:Rite of Life painting 3 one in the series of three. Women's work involves creating life not only physically through literal cell division but also through other traditional women's tasks like nurturing, and feeding so this painting highlighting the creation of life with cells is appropriate.

Starting over can be a very beautiful thing as modeled to us by the creator of this universe that we find so lovely to imagine.

Welcome to the Spring 2016 term of Study of Ancient Runes! As you have read in your class prompt this semester we are exploring the applications of the concepts behind runes as they have evolved in modern times. We will be focusing on the fascinating topic of Sigils and Hyper Sigils. Sigils can be a little complicated to understand if you have never heard of them so here is some information on further reading, and other multi-media inspiration as you go on your personal journey to find your project based on sigils:

One of the most prominent people to explore the use of sigilism in self expression is Grant Morrison. He wrote the comic Invisibles which is a Hypersigil or a large work that includes many smaller symbols or sigils that work together to make a greater statement about the maker and their desired impact on the universe. People that incorporate the use of sigils in their art are trying to effect change on the world and reach a desired outcome with their piece.

Understandably, you may not have the time or desire to read a giant omnibus, (although, I would advise you to give it a try as it is amazing), So Here is another example of a hypersigil that has lots of different media and smaller parts to try, however I also recommend that you experience the entire thing. This one is the Killjoys universe created by the band My Chemical Romance and Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan. There are several pieces to this universe: The My Chemical Romance album Danger Days, Two music videos from that album that tell the story in a cinematic way Na Na Na and Sing, and there is a comic called The True Lives of The Fabulous Killjoys. This universe communicates a philosophy of creative freedom and individuality. It encourages the reader to actualize their lives, not just artists, but anyone of any calling in life. It inspires you to think that you can rise above decay and despair. That you don't always have to do what society says is easy. You can see that in these graphics from the album:

To build these large philosophies, there are smaller symbols or sigils used to identify different parts and characters of the story like these: Each of these is the personal sigil that the four main killjoys in the music videos have chosen for themselves. Not only do they serve as names and identifying marks but they say something non-verbal about the power and energy of each character.

There are even symbols to identify and communicate the intentions of organizations and villains like this one for BLI (Better Living Industries) the governing corporation in the Killjoys universe:

So, given all of this inspiration and examples of the use of sigils to communicate not only an identity but a spirit and energy about you, ask yourself these questions: What does your spiritual energy look like? What symbols would identify you, not just your name but what you stand for? What do you stand for? The answers to these questions can be very introspective and complicated, or as light and simple as you choose, but in these answers you may find some great projects!

Oh and one more point of inspiration, Grant Morrison was one of Gerard Way's great artistic heroes when he was a kid and into his early adult life as a struggling artist, but through their like mindedness and appreciation for each other's work they became friends and Grant Morrison is actually in those music videos that I mentioned as seen in this pic:

We are all connected, even people that we have on pedestals, or admire from afar. Things like art can be like a family tree where the things that we express are like the DNA that unite us all as family. Using sigilism in your art is like deciding what you want to be in that genetic code that connects you to your "family"
