1  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Discussion and Questions / Handmade clothes durability issues on: June 25, 2009 12:46:42 PM
I have only been sewing for a year or so and have noticed a problem with durability on some of the clothes I have sewn the kids. After some of the clothes are washed a few times some of them are starting to come apart at certain seams. This has happened at the end of seams for both sewn and serged items and in one case in a crotch of some pants.  I have also noticed it on a few things I have appliqued or top stitched. I am using good quality quilters cotton fabric and Coats and Clark Dual Duty thread. In many cases I am spending more to made clothes than I would it if I bought them. For that reason I want them to last at least as long as store bought stuff.

Do most of you wash them differently than regular store bought clothes? I ask because I have not noticed this until after I take them out of the dryer. I suspect I may need to air dry the stuff I sew and skip the dryer.

Are there some tricks to more durable stitching other than the typical steps of  adding a few backstitches? To fix this do I need to sew seams and go back and serge the edges as well. I sometimes serge without the extra sewn stitch and would think that would be adequate.

Please advise.

These are so cute and the photos are great. I have this pattern but have never made it. Thanks for the reminder!

WOW. A clear shower curtain. That is really clever and would cover tons of pattern pieces. I replace my plastic liner about once a year since after a few washings then the upper holes start to tear. Now I can recycle them now for that.

You are a clever lady!

LOVE the shirt. Been hoping to get some of that Mendicino line once it goes on sale somewhere. Never envisioned it for my son but it is perfect for a boy too. Thanks for the inspiration!

That is really cute. What I good idea and I like the fabric. I wanted to make the top after I saw the SMS tute but was pretty sure it would not be flattering on me. If you are over a  certain cup size these kind of cute tops are hard to pull off (that is a complaint NOT a brag) and end up looking like maternity tops.  This is a great compromise to make the cute pattern work for a child.
