1  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Pretty solution for toddler-proofing furniture on: July 31, 2008 08:51:47 AM
As in scratch and dent-proofing!  With a toddler who occasionally bangs his toys onto the table before you can say "no-no", we wanted to come up with a solution to protect our new end tables.  The tables aren't ultra expensive, but they are pretty and new.  Wink

We tried a regular towel on top of the table, but our little boy pulled the towel and the lamp fell off and nearly hit him!!  (The lamp is now actually broken - the part that connects the shade to the lamp, but we were just so thankful he didn't get hurt.)

Therefore, I decided to make a fitted table covering.

1st - I bought this crushed panne fabric yesterday for $3.40 a yard (and I think a yard will do both end tables) and some thin elastic.  I washed the fabric and dried it.

2nd - I measured the dimensions I needed to cover the table and the extra to form the overhang part.

3rd - I cut the material out using yardsticks to draw straight cutting lines.

4th - I sewed the elastic along the edges (forming rounded corners at the corners) and then cut the extra fabric away from the corners.

5th - Put it on the table and enjoy!

For something so easy and quick, I was most pleased with it.  [It probably took 20 minutes from cutting to completion - if that.]  I was surprised how elegant it looks for $3.59 worth of supplies per table.  That includes the thin elastic packs I bought for $1.89 each.

Oh, and it matches the red accents we have decorated with in the living room.

Here it is:
