I do mine a little bit different to keep the zipper seams and bottom seams from showing. Sew the zipper in like you would on a flat zipper pouch. Then sew the bottom seam of the lining together, then the bottom seam of the outside together. Pull the outside through the inside so that you basically have an inside out tube. Then finish the ends like she describes.

They close fairly securely I don't think they would open if dropped but they don't close completely. It would be good for holding everything but change.

Here is a couple of snap bags that I have made. The purse is called the snap happy purse. I designed the cosmetic pouch myself. The fabric came from Ikea. The closure is a measuring tape.  Let me know what you think.

The zipper looks good especially for your first try. I would only change one thing. I usually topstich along the edge of the fabric to give things a more finished look and to get the fabric to lay flatter. It also keeps the lining from getting stuck in the zipper later. There is a tutorial somewhere on the site on how to do it.

The straps are sewn onto the exterior before the sides are assembled. They are run down the sides of the pocket and  hold the pocket on.

You could use vinyl for the outside or you could use cotton fabric and stiffen it with iron on interfacing.

Make some homemade bias tape if you have any leftovers of the owl fabric or find a color to match then sew it around the edges.

The outside came from Joann's last year and the inside came from Joann's this year.
