2  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Knitting for Medecins sans Frontieres on: November 05, 2010 03:06:14 PM
I just saw this on Twitter and thought there might be some people here interested

http://www.p-hop.co.uk/index.php/patterns/

Basically, you donate (no fixed amount) to download a knitting pattern and the money goes to Medecins Sans Frontieres. There's no set amount as you're encouraged to donated the amount of pennies per hour of pleasure the pattern gives you. They've already raised over 20,000 on the UK site, $3000 on the US one and there's even a Euro one for the Irish knitters  Grin

4  SEWING IN GENERAL / Machine Embroidery: Completed Projects / Spare brain for a new med student on: September 09, 2010 01:28:55 PM
One of the receptionists at my chiropractic clinic has always been lovely and chatty and has just passed her A levels with good enough grades to get into med school in London. Rather than just a boring, bought card, I thought she should have a portable extra brain for when the studying gets too much  Tongue

It's the Urban Threads brain (of course!), surrounded by one of their patch frames, and sewn on glittery white felt. It was my first patch attempt and went a bit wonky, but it doesn't show too much (and she loved it, which is the main thing!)

Details of swap:

You will be crafting one Tiny Haunted House for your partner.  This swap will have the same parameters as the OTT or One Tiny Thing swap.  Your house must be smaller than 4 X 4", and can be made in any media with any materials you choose.  The goal is to craft something tiny that you can create with a high level of skill.  Careful work, beautiful details, embellishment and interesting finishes/stitches/clay work, etc. are encouraged.

You will have one partner.  You can only send your partner one Tiny House, so extras are not allowed in this swap.  We want a relatively low-impact swap that won't break the piggy bank on materials or shipping.

Rules of the Swap

Additional requirements:

1.  Keep in regular contact with me (the organizer).  When pm'ing me about the swap always put Tiny Haunted House Swap in the subject so I don't miss your pm.  If you foresee that you will have a problem sending out on time or have another issue please let me know as soon as it comes up.

2.  Keep in regular contact with your partner.

3. YOU MUST PM ME AND YOUR PARTNER WHEN YOU SEND AND WHEN YOU RECEIVE.  If you are sending within your own country, you must have a DC# (delivery confirmation number).  When  you pm to say you have sent, be sure to include your DC number.  If you are sending outside of your country and cannot get a tracking number, you must keep your receipt as proof of shipping and preferably send me a scan/photo of it.

4.  When you receive, you must post pictures in the gallery. If you don't have a digital camera, make sure you let your partner know so that s/he can photograph their work before shipping, and post their own pictures once you've received.  This is a good thing to do anyhow, just in case (God forbid) your package gets lost in the mail or something...

If you want to participate, complete the following questionaire and pm it to me (do not post your response in the thread).

QUESTIONNAIRE TO ANSWER:

6  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / A quick answer about sign up times needed please :) on: September 09, 2010 04:05:52 AM
Is there a minimum amount of time sign ups need to be open? I've volunteered to organise a tiny haunted house swap which we want to get going really quickly so that they can hopefully arrive in time for Halloween, so ideally sign ups would only be a week to allow enough crafting time. Too short?
7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / Just a double check [When to give feedback?] on: May 18, 2010 08:04:21 AM
Is it OK to give someone feedback on a swap when their partner has received and posted the pictures? I'd like to do it that way if possible as I have a few first time swappers who, I'm sure, would like to be freed up ASAP for another one Wink
8  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Simplicity 9769 corset question on: May 14, 2010 03:34:30 AM
I'm looking to make my first ever corset with this pattern, and wondered if anyone could answer some of my  Huh. Firstly, I'm not particularly after a waist training corset or anything, more something that looks OK and isn't a complete nightmare to make, so would plastic boning do instead of the steel recommended (it will also only be getting occasional wear)? Secondly, I don't have the pattern to hand but the envelope back is vague about fabrics - I assume I need 7/8 yard of the outer AND 7/8 yard of coutil for it? And lastly (honest Wink), is it a lot more hassle to make a corset reversible than one sided (I was thinking brocade-coutil-brocade, for example).

Thanks for any help and apologies for dumb questions!

10  CLOTHING / Costumes: Discussion and Questions / Pattern suggestions for a wannabe vampire on: May 07, 2010 02:22:56 AM
I apologise for this, but my head is  Huh from searching so I thought I'd turn to the experts Wink

I'm going to a True Blood 'Fangtasia' themed party in August, and will be going the vampire route (complete with retractable fangs). I've got a vague idea in my head but can't find patterns to get it from brain to fabric - I'll be wearing an underbust corset/cincher and want a top underneath. The head pic is a thin black fabric (bit heavier than chiffon, like lawn) with a machine embroidered skull damask pattern on the back, open to the waist or a very low v neck (imagine an unbuttoned collarless shirt), BIG sleeves, no collar. All the patterns I can find have buttons or really weird crossover bits which Im assuming would not be good under a tight corset. I've looked at the proper chemise patterns, but they seem too un slutty  Embarrassed

I'll try and draw a picture of my head pic but thpught someone might have just the thing tucked away in their head.

Thankies!
