1  HOME SWEET HOME / Exterior Decorating / Yard Art / Gardening: Completed Projects / Upside-down tomato planter from old rice container on: May 23, 2011 02:31:51 AM
We finished a big tub of rice, and I kept the container, knowing I'd do something with it!  I decided to drill a hole in the base, fill with compost and plant a tomato plant (variety: Tumbling Tom) in it.  I have since wrapped a tea towel around it to protect the roots from the sun, and have hung it on a hanging basket stand.   Smiley

For the full story and photos, have a look at our blog!  http://canthack.org/2011/05/re-use-and-recycle-various-gardening-hacks/

***Update***

Some photos of the plant in full bloom, with the addition of a tea towel to protect the roots from the sun!

2  HOME SWEET HOME / Exterior Decorating / Yard Art / Gardening: Completed Projects / Wooden wine and port boxes turned into planters! on: May 02, 2011 12:32:23 PM
Our local Oddbins (wine/beer shop) was closing down and we popped in to grab some bargains.
Sadly the booze was mostly sold! But we found these lovely wine and port boxes for 2 each.

I got them home, drilled holes in the bottom (badly!!!)
...and planted a courgette plant in one, and the other will be for spinach and lettuce. Smiley

***UPDATE***
A photo of the other container with various varieties of lettuce, and spinach.  (Around it are pots of rocket.)
3  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Looking for favourite (easy) Christmas dinner recipes! on: December 04, 2010 02:14:52 AM
I am cooking for some friends this Christmas, and am looking for some easy, delicious Christmassy recipes.  What are your favourite starters, sides and mains?  None are vegetarian so meat dishes are fine, but not compulsory.  Thanks Smiley
4  CLOTHING / Clothing for Curvaceous Craftsters: Completed Projects / Wearable electronics (jumper gets Christmassy!) on: November 28, 2010 01:31:34 PM
With a lot of help from a very patient friend, I had my first foray into electronics this weekend!  I decorated an unChristmassy jumper to make it festive, and adorned it with LEDs.  I created a circuit with LEDs, resistors and a battery pack, and sewed and glued them in place on my jumper.

See a picture of it, and a step-by-step guide of what I did, here: http://canthack.sdfsdfs.com/2010/11/ugly-christmas-jumper

Next week, I am hoping to add even more LEDs and make a matching hairband!  Let me know what you think.
5  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Pickled (canned) chillies - yumtastic :) on: October 04, 2010 02:25:00 PM
Made these pickled (or canned for our American friends!) home-grown chillies at the weekend.  Great fun and we're really looking forward to trying them when they're ready.  Haven't tried it before, but it's been a fun experiment Smiley

2x jars of whole chillies
1x sliced jalapenos

The one thing that I have learnt from growing your own chillies is...you can never grow too many!  40ish plants gave us a basinfull of chillies.

6  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Two necklaces made from scarves on: September 24, 2010 12:22:04 PM
I made these the other day, using chiffon scarves and beads from an old necklace.  Hope you like!

7  HOME SWEET HOME / Exterior Decorating / Yard Art / Gardening: Completed Projects / Seed starter plant pots made from toilet roll tubes on: June 08, 2010 02:51:31 PM
My mum came up with a great idea...making seed starter plant pots out of toilet roll tubes!  Eco-friendly, biodegradable and uses up toilet roll tubes!  Wish I'd had them this year, I ended up using plastic glasses and yoghurt pots!  At least I have loads ready now for next spring.   Smiley

8  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Ubuntu Linux themed pizza! on: May 08, 2010 03:04:41 AM
We were having a very geeky Ubuntu Linux launch party for the Lucid Lynx launch, and I wanted to theme the food with the new colour theme...unfortunate ly it is purple and white, of which there isn't much food!

So I went for an Ubuntu logo pizza Smiley using pepperoni and orange peppers on a margherita base.  Hope you like it!  *sniggers geekily*
