Great idea! I'm definitely going to try this. I made planters from old wine boxes - have a look here http://canthack.org/2011/05/re-use-and-recycle-various-gardening-hacks/

Thank you! My dad also had the great idea of using a hanging bag to plant them in, and that's worked amazingly too. Both have worked better than the same plants in hanging baskets. Will definitely plant things upside down again! Smiley

They're wood.  Proper planks of wood too, rather than mdf!

Good work! Do you find that you start looking at everything and wondering if it'll work as a planter? I do! Buckets, boxes, tins...I am starting quite a collection for next year Smiley

We finished a big tub of rice, and I kept the container, knowing I'd do something with it!  I decided to drill a hole in the base, fill with compost and plant a tomato plant (variety: Tumbling Tom) in it.  I have since wrapped a tea towel around it to protect the roots from the sun, and have hung it on a hanging basket stand.   Smiley

***Update***

Some photos of the plant in full bloom, with the addition of a tea towel to protect the roots from the sun!

Our local Oddbins (wine/beer shop) was closing down and we popped in to grab some bargains.
Sadly the booze was mostly sold! But we found these lovely wine and port boxes for 2 each.

I got them home, drilled holes in the bottom (badly!!!)
...and planted a courgette plant in one, and the other will be for spinach and lettuce. Smiley

***UPDATE***
A photo of the other container with various varieties of lettuce, and spinach.  (Around it are pots of rocket.)

Glad to hear it's been of use!  It's such a resourceful use for something that everyone has.
