1  Firefly/serenity & Buffy illustrations - Whedonverse art! in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by JennaDickes on: June 27, 2012 09:02:55 PM
I was asked to be part of a nerd-themed show at an art gallery (the gallery is on the second floor of this amazing comic book shop of course), and I immediately knew that I had to come up with some awesome Whedonverse stuff.

Firefly is my favorite series so that was a no brainer. If you can't read it, one of the flags says "Big Damn Heroes".

I also wanted to do a Buffy drawing that I did for my partner, Spikefan, in the last Wedonverse swap. She graciously scanned it for me so I could submit it to the gallery  Wink It has a lot of hidden detail from the series.

If any of you happen to be in the Ft. Lauderdale-Miami area you should check out the show! It opens this Friday at the Bear and Bird Gallery. They've done a couple Star Wars themed shows and the crafts that people turned in were seriously amazing. I also have some prints of the Firefly drawing made and thinking it might make for a cool t shirt design  Grin

2  Re: Whedonverse Swap round 8 gallery in The Swap Gallery by JennaDickes on: April 06, 2012 03:08:13 PM
I received an awesome package from Spikefan today!
First this great semi-silhouette of Mal in felt. He's my favorite character in the whole Whedonverse so I'm super happy I now have something of him  Grin

A bunch of detailed carved stamps from the various shows that will get much use.

Another silhouette hoop, this time of Buffy and Spike (sorry for the blurriness). I like how you can tell it's so them just from the shapes, hehe.

A Jayne hat! I've wanted one for the longest time. There was also a little Kaylee inspired crochet ring that I forgot to get in the pics which I'm wearing already.

Aaaand my favorite thing I've ever gotten in a swap, a handmade firefly sketchbook! The book is made so well and it's even real leather. The embroidery is based off an illustration from my pinterest. It looks sooo good in needlepoint (better than the original!) that I think I'm going to copy it so there can be another on my wall  Cheesy

Thanks so much for everything, Spikefan! I'm so impressed by everything.

3  Another Hunger Games arena embroidery, this time with a quote in Needlework: Completed Projects by JennaDickes on: March 21, 2012 03:50:34 PM
My partner for the OTT hunger games swap (we opted to do bigger than tiny things) received so I can post this thing! Apparently I'm insane, because I started this so soon after finishing the first one, but I couldn't resist since I knew she liked that one. Here's the link to it if you missed it: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=404643.0

This took a little less time to finish, probably around 10 hours total, because I had already gotten used to all the new stitches I was using. For this I used 3 different variations of the fishbone stitch (pretty sure I invented them out of sheer naivety), back stitch, split, french knots, colonial knots, satin stitch, lazy daisy, and some weird satin with partially raised stitches that I made up on accident. I had actually wanted to make the forest even denser but I ran out of time. I also planned to add more things from the arena like in the last one too. This one only has the streams, cave, and career tent.

I received from SakuraCat today! I think its safe to say we both spent so much time on our projects that they could count as several "large" items  Cheesy
I got this incredibly detailed Katniss amurigami(sp?). I love it. She's now living on my bookshelf, far from where my cats will be able to nab her. Check out that tiny Mockingjay pin.

On her back is a fully functional orange pack. I didn't think there could possibly be anything that fits in there but I opened it anyway to see and found all the stuff she carried around in the games:

There's a water bottle, crackers, groosling meat, knife (those last two look especially realistic), iodine, matches, wire coil, and a square piece of plastic that apparently ran out of frame.

And last a really cool crochet necklace (perfect for me) and a patch.

Thanks Sakuracat!!

I got some extra goodies today from Scuttlebutt! Some supplies she had ordered came in late so she sent these as a separate package.

There's a gorgeous Mockingjay pin, a keychain, and a tree stamp.

I love the pin! And it perfectly matches this purse I made a while back, which is now its home.

6  Hunger Games arena embroidery - possible spoiler warning! in Needlework: Completed Projects by JennaDickes on: February 27, 2012 04:39:38 PM
My Hunger Games swap partner received today so I can finally post this!

I'm pretty proud of it because it's by far the most detailed embroidery hoop I've ever tried. I call him Roger, we spent a lot of time together over the last month and became close friends. The fucker stabbed me a lot but it's ok, I forgave him after he patiently listened to all my late-night rants about how I'm just so exasperated with the political climate in this country. And then I found out his sister (a green plastic hoop) died last week and I felt like such a jerk for going on and on about nonsense.

Aaanyway, I used to only ever use maybe 5 types of basic stitches. For this one I used French knots, colonial knots, stem stitch, whipped backstitch, split stitch, rope stitch, Lazy Daisy, Oyster stitch, Raised Cup stitch, lots of Fishbone stitch manipulations, aaand Satin. The biggest challenge was figuring out a bunch of different ways to do the trees so that the forest would look interesting.

Now for the arena itself. I took some artistic license with the geography to make it fit pretty in the hoop, so it's not quite canon but everything that happened in the book is represented inside. Here is a list of all those little things - (don't read this if you want to avoid spoilers of the book!) the cornucopia with tribute platforms, career tent, a tracker jacker near the spring, Thresh's grainy domain, a few little brown bunnies, Nightlock berries, Katniss' arrow, parachute gift, the cave, and of course a mockingjay.

This is the picture my partner took. The lighting in my pics is bad so this shows the texture better.

Also, for anyone who missed the big Hunger Games swap, there's still time left to sign up for the OTT one!

I got a wonderful package from Scuttlebutt this morning!
First a messenger bag which I love. It's very close to these bags from my wist that I'd been drooling over. Now I have one  Grin

The backside of it with an arrow stenciled on. I also got a keychain with a quote from Haymitch on it and a catch-all tray. I love the color of it, it makes me think of the arena in Catching Fire.

And a cross stitch quote that has found a home on my little wall of hoops. You can't tell as much in this pic but there is a very nice color gradation to the lettering.

Inside the bag were some copies of recipes from the Hunger Games cookbook. I've been wanting to get that book so it's perfect! Thanks so much for all the goodies Katie!

Now to wait for her to get my package, which I'm equally excited for.

8  Re: Wes Anderson Swap, Take 4 GALLERY! in The Swap Gallery by JennaDickes on: February 21, 2012 10:18:02 AM
Literally 2 minutes after I posted the above, my awesome package from PollyPrissyPants arrived! I guess the post office gods heard me.
I opened the box, saw a bunch of knitted stuff in great Wesonian colors, and squealed with joy.

A team Zissou beanie and a light scarf. This pic looks like a jellyfish, appropriate  Cheesy

A Darjeeling themed scarf. I looove the way its loosely knitted (or crocheted? I suck at both so I don't know the difference haha). This sort of thing is perfect for FL since it barely gets cold, it's light enough to wear.

Some felt greeting cards themed around Darjeeling, Life Aquatic and Rushmore.

And my favorite, I nice big unpaid intern messenger bag! It has a little patch on the front which I love because everything with the interns just cracks me up. The Perfect Attendance patch on the inside is a great touch too. The writing on  the fabric goes all the way around and says a bunch of my favorite quotes.

Inside it were some crucial school/intern supplies. Sadly, I do not get my own glock.

Thanks so much for the wonderful package Polly! And for organizing!

Now to wait impatiently for Stitchz to get my package  =D

I may have to take you up on that, Najaorama.
I sent my package out this morning. The extra week turned out to be a blessing because I got to start over on my large that I had seriously screwed up. Not going to say how because it'd give it away...and it's embarrassing and I should know better.

Here's a teaser!

10  Re: Hunger Games Swap rd 1 (SU through Jan 27th or we reach 24 send by Feb 24th) in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by JennaDickes on: January 04, 2012 12:56:46 AM
We need a picture to add to the original post so that people will see it on the front page as a hot new topic!

Might I suggest this one that I just whipped up?  Grin
