My son wanted to be Kai from Lego Ninjago this year.

The head is made of two foam floral wreaths covered with a camping sleeping mat (super lightweight) and covered by flannel backed satin.. the yellow part is 3 layers of see through fabrics (tulle, organza?, some sort of sheer stuff ).  he could see through it easily. 

The body is made of foam core and covered with the same red satin.

The legs are made with an oatmeal can cut in half for that wierd lego hip bubble thing in the front and camping pad structure with shoe boxes for feet.  I intentionally left the legs a little "high water" so he could walk easier..





Forgive the horrible picture quality - our house was broken into this summer and the jerks stole my digital slr.  wah. 

It was actually a lot of fun and pretty true to lego scale.

When I asked my soon to be 5yr old son what kind of cake he wanted for his birthday I meant chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or something along those lines.  He replied "I want a cake that looks like a bag of popcorn" and didn't waiver from that idea. 
I'd been wanting to try marshmallow fondant and it worked really well for this.  It worked remarkably well for the individual popcorn pieces. 

My son's birthday party is this coming Saturday and I loathe goody bags full of crap little toys that never make it out of my car. I always try to find something that's a little different, useful, yet still fun.  I found some kids shirts on clearance last year for $1.50 each and I got the entire lot.  My son has had glasses since he was 2 and loves music and monkeys so i started sketching and came up with this design.  It's silk screened and done with a photo emulsion kit.  Now my husband has me all paranoid that kids actually like the little crap toys and aren't going to care much for a tshirt.  So i've bought a chinese yo-yo and some candy to include with it.

So more just an entry to show off the cute.. as there are some truly amazing costumes on here...but it is oldschool duct tape and homemade Halloween crafty goodness.

The doods were Ghostbusters this year.  We just made plain tan jumpsuits and sewed on a patch.  I used those cheap nylon sack back pack things with a cereal box inside as their proton packs and just adorned it with some gear looking things and gauges, along with some flashing tubey lights (made for decorating your bike).  You can't tell from the pictures very well but on Halloween I actually attached a candy chute (furnace ducting) to the top so they could just put their hand up near the back of their ear and drop the candy into the tubing/chute and use it as their trick or treat bag.  I think I will try to incorporate this concept into every costume from here on out.. it worked great!  






Oh I also used a silly string gun and put a pringles can around it to make it look less gun-like and made it their ectoplasm shooters that shot out green silly string.

A crafty mom + an English husband + 2 cute kids not really old enough to choose their Halloween costumes yet = the Holy Grail's King Arthur & The Killer Bunny. 

I was amazed how many ppl immediately recognized who they were.. and quite pleased.  I love Halloween.
