what about using elastic thread and making the shirred dresses? you can basically sew it in a tube, shirr the top of it and make straps and have a beach cover up Smiley

I've made candles out of mine, I cut the tops off with the "bottle cutter" kid (i's like $15 or something comes with sandpaper and instrutions on how to pop the top of the bottle off) then I make candles in the bottom, they are super cool the way the light works with them. you can even etch the outside with some fun designs, or just keep the lable on it if you like it.

I made a really cool quilt out of all our families old jeans. I used anything with no seems or pockets ( you can use those for bags/pillows etc) and saved jeans for several years. I am NOT a quilter by any means, so this was simply 5x5 squares that I sewed together and then put flees on the back and used yarn to knot at the corner seems...

I made this 20 years ago in college and STILL use it.. I can even remember some of the jeans LOL Wink

16  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Kids Art Keepsake Ornament (art encased in glass) Tutorial ;) on: August 28, 2011 03:07:31 PM

This is my first tutorial on Craftster.. let me know any tips on posting better tutorials Wink

My kiddos just turned 3 and since day 1 of finger painting and art, Ive kept nearly everything. I use it for wrapping paper (family loves this) and keep trying to come up with creative ways to use the art theyve made.  I have to say, this is one of my favorites. A keepsake ornament or you could even use it in your rear view mirror in the car.

I took a tried and true art method of Soldering 2 pieces of glass together, and just modified it to use my kiddos art! Ill be doing this one every year for the holidays as they are definitely a beautiful addition to any christmas tree!

First step: Learn how to solder There are LOTS of tutorials here on craftster about soldering pendants/jewelry and it's the same method for the ornaments.

Supplies:

- Simply Soldered Soldering Kit (has everything you need to solder) - Or if you dont want the kit, youll need: Lead - free solder, Copper tape, flux, soldering iron, glass for encasing (see below for microsope glass), Jump rings,
- Microscope slides (I get mine on Ebay, they usually come in a box of 50, which makes 25 ornaments)
- ribbon for hanging ornament
- Kiddos fingerpaint or painting artwork (DONT use Tempura paint, it will melt/run, we use the crayola fingerpaint or brush paint)
- scissors
- pencil or pen
- Metal polish to finish off the solder/glass for that final shine (stained glass stores, or other online stores, just look for metal polish or stained glass polish)

Steps:

- take the microsocope glass and lay it over the artwork to find the 2 areas that look best under the glass
- trace around the glass for both pieces of artwork (You need 2 for each slide so that you have a piece of art showing through both sides)
 - cut on the INSIDE of your tracing lines so that it fits inside the glass.
 - clean the glass so you dont have fingerprint smudges (windex is fab for this)
 - sandwitch the artwork so that the backsides are back to back and the art is showing through the front and back of the glass. Make sure there is no paper sticking out as the copper foil wont stick to the paper well and it will look messy.
- tape the copper foil
 - flux and solder
 - Flux and solder the jump ring perpendicular on one of the skinny/smaller sides of the ornament
 - polish the solder and glass
 - add ribbon to the jump ring
 - Wrap it up in a pretty box and give it for a great holiday gift! Family LOVES these and you can make it a great holiday tradition!
