1  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Free motion issuue on: July 13, 2015 08:57:24 PM
I just got my mom's old singer circa 1970s.  Its a great machine and I took it because it is great at freemotion (the one time i checked it out and saw it worked great).

Now I can't get freemotion going.  I have the manual and did everything:

  • took the pressure off the darning thingie at the top
  • moved the feed dogs to down position
  • removed the pressure foot (manual shows there isn't one for embroidry/freemotion)
  • tried to pull the bottom thread through to the top to start and that just won't work.

Any ideas on how a) I can pull the bottom thread through? and b) what else I might be doing wrong? Huh

Make sure the thread isn't coming off the arm that goes up and down.  Sometimes if it comes off, that can happen.  Go through the threading and see if it is done correctly.

It shouldn't be set as look as possible.  There is definitely some adjustment needed and that could include the bobbin casing tension.

4  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Team Umizoomi, its time for action! on: June 25, 2015 02:29:59 PM
My son loves Umizoomi.  Unfortunately, the show was cancelled and all the toys are aftermarket which means they are crazy prices ($43 for a 4 inch $7 toy).

So I decided to make him a Bot backpack for his birthday.  I had to wait three weeks to give it to him which was difficult especially since I wasn't sure he would still like the show by then!

I got a basic backpack pattern online then modified the front.  It was a decent pattern but I would definitely make some changes next time.  I also ran out of piping so the back isn't piped.  That makes it more flimsy.  But when I'm sewing at midnight over a coffee table, my attitude is get it done!  Its good enough for a toddler!

He loved it. Had a huge smile on his face and wouldn't take it off.  The only thing I couldn't find was a two inch disco ball for a zipper pull.  That would have been the best final touch.

Well this gave me something to do on a late night Smiley

So better flow coming in with the recliner by the window as well.  also can see the tv from the table.  blue is the lamps.

Bedroom... altar in far corner, bookcases at the foot of the bed (who doesn't like to see bookcases from bed?).  laundry in the closet, stool inside the door.
8  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Re: My adventure in refinishing... just starting out on: January 13, 2015 02:27:13 PM
Sadly, its still sitting there. Its a matter of funds.  My spouse isn't allowed to work yet and with daycare.... so ya, its not done yet.

Meanwhile, I've accumulated a 70's ..ish.. desk and chair to do too.

Hopefully by the time I have play funds, i'll have decided on the colour too.  Lots of General Finishes milk paints look amazing!

Here's the site:  https://generalfinishes.com/

Lots of inspiration on their Facebook page too as people keep submitting completed pieces.

10  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Mugs rugs on: November 23, 2014 09:09:57 PM
Hi all,

I got my craft on recently thinking I could make some much needed $$ for Christmas.

So I made some mug rugs.  There are two more space girls to come.  Then I'll do some male firefighter pin ups (don't want to be sexist after all...).

I hate selling things.  I'm one of those who give things away.  I priced them at $15 CDN (this is a private sale, no one here can be involved).  Considering I had to butcher the fabric to get the girls, etc, I thought that was fair.  They are 10x7". I will do plain ones for $10 CDN.  Does that sound fair?
