I received today from amc-!!!!  Yay!!  Such awesome Disney goodies!!!

First is a set of Disney Princess crowns.  These will be perfect when my niece comes over so we can play dressup! She's obsessed with all of the princesses.

Next is a set of Mickey and Minnie hairclips.  These are sooo cute!!  Can't wait to wear them!

We have another hairclip but this one is amazing!!!  It's all ribbons and it's Belle!!  Soo amazed by this!

A lovely blue box with a painting of Belle on it. Lots of attention to details on the painting.  Super pretty! I'll haveta put some of my treasures in there.

Inside the box was some extras. Erasers, a pen, and some stickers! Woot!

An awesome Wanted poster of Flynn Rider... Did they get the nose right this time???

And finally an adorable Chip Mug!!!  He even has the little chip at the top left of the picture. It's so adorable!!!!! *cuddles the mug*

3  Dancing Baby Groot! in Pottery, Ceramics, etc: Completed Projects by shdwstrm on: August 26, 2014 07:16:56 PM
Hi All!!

After watching the awesome tutorial made by NerdEcrafter
http://youtu.be/W2zbDnO47BU
I was inspired to try my own hand at making a dancing Groot

Due to accessibility issues, AKA my parents not wanting the house roaring hot from the oven and stinking, I made my Groot out of air dry clay.  This presented some major issues for me (drying out too quick and cracking,) but I was able to overcome them.

I first started off with a wire frame and lumped a large amount of clay around it o make the base of the figure. BTW the base I'm using is a Styrofoam piece cut to fit into a 4" pot which I inverted.  I later used it in the actual pot.

I then started making long snakes and attached them to the base to make a vine/bark effect.  This is where I had some issues with the clay drying out too fast. I also molded the hands.  They turned out a bit to large for my liking but I'm okay with it.

I then molded the head and plunked it on the base.  The branches coming from the head were going to be impossible to make out of the clay so I put wires in the head for a solution later on.

After the figure had dried I had some of the long snakes break and around the neck had cracked as well.

No problem! I used some light molding paste as a repair/ crack filler.  I ended up covering the entire piece in this.  It gave a slight rough texture which added to the bark effect.

After allowing that to dry I then painted the entire piece in a basecoat of brown acrylic paint.  Then I went to town with a small brush and various shades of brown and some green to drybrush some details into the piece.  I also glued some moss to the head to act at the branches. Sorry! Forgot to take pics of this part.

Pop him into a white painted pot and he's done!!!

Closeup of the face.  I used some clear nailpolish on the eyes to make them glossy.  I like the contrast of the glossy eyes to the matte paint on the body.

Closeup of the main body.  You can see the drybrushing I did.  I'm not the greatest at this but I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Please let me know what you think!
Thanks!

working on my recreation of this project.

Unfortunately to due accessibility issues (aka my parents don't want the house roaring with heat from the oven and the polymer clay is a bit stinky when being baked and my mom is very sensitive to smells,) I'm making mine out of air dry clay.  UGH!!! That's all I can say.  Air dry clay is fun to work with but man can it be fiddly!! The poor hands on my Groot and very delicate and I had to opt out of doing the spikes for the roots at the top of his head.  I've come up with another option tho.

Here's some in progress pics

First this is the base of the body with part of the wire skeleton I made to help support it.  The wire extends beyond the clay and into the base.

Next is the base and arms covered with long and short strands of clay for texture.  This was pretty fiddly and time consuming.  The hands are a bit bigger than I wanted but I'm okay with that.

He has a head!!!  This was the hardest part to get right.  I followed along with the tutorial but had difficulty with the eyes (I ended up just making a circular indentation rather than hollowing out a section for another piece. I had to opt out of the branches on the head so I've got wires sticking out and after it dries and is painted, I'm going to glue moss to the wires for the head.

Overall I think he's looking pretty cute. I'll post more pics after he's dried completely (a day or so) and he's been painted and mossified lol.

Oh the green thing hes sitting is is a piece of foam that fits perfectly into the top of a 4" clay pot when flipped around the other way.
