5  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Funky Denim Handbag! - Updated version: with tutorial and pics!!! on: October 23, 2004 05:22:49 PM
Hey all you beautiful artsy people!

Well this is a bag I made recently, It was my first attempt at doing anything crafty, was lotsa fun!
A few people have asked for tutorials so I modified my previous post so that the first post on the thread would be the tutorial. Its my first time writing a tutorial as well...so I hope its clear enuf.
Note: The pics are from different bags in different levels of production incase yer wondering (sorry so sloppy)

What you need:
sewing machine ( or not if you dont mind doin it by hand )
needle n threads
crafts scissors ( to cut thru jeans )
colorful buttons
pair of jeans
pins ( as shown in the pic)
measuring tape/ruler
150cm long bag strap
funky strands ( as show in pic)
unpicker ( not totaly necesary)
patience and tolerance to pain ( dunno if that applies to you but lets jus say i have a buncha lil holes in my fingers now)
Time : Takes about 2-3hrs

Ok first of all Id like to mention that the size of the jeans reflects the size of the bag. I personally used a size 14 ( dont know about sizes in your area..so check it out or ask me and I'll give you some more detail ) but yeah..the bigger the jeans..the wider the bag..vice versa.

1) Get your pair of jeans and fold em to like look so:

2) Cut this part of the leg and make sure to leave extra space (about 3-4cm) below the pockets and also leave some width. I personally cut at a length of 33 cm and width of 40cm.

If you prefer, you can remove stitches from the zipper and back of the jeans

The result should like something like this:

3) Then with whats left of that leg...cut at the same length of the piece above, remove stitches and cut at the same width as well

4) Now put the first piece and second piece ontop of each other..make sure theyre the same size, flip them over and sew the bottom and both sides...make sure you dont sew over the pockets..leave a bit of space.

5) ok now flip it over..and check that the bag is the way you want..make the adjustments you need and now for the handle. Youll need pins, a needle n thread and a handle thats about 120cm long.

http://images5.theimagehosting.com/closeup.2.jpg

Cut the handle into 2 pieces, so that each one is about 60cm long..now place the handle where you want..and push the pin into the jeans( I used a little scissor to help me make a lil hole), thru the handle and twist. You could also sew for extra support.

6) Now we'll work on the extra details..there are so many more ideas you'll probably come up with but here are a few funky ones I came up with myself and thought id share. Youll need buttons and a needle n thread for this part. I personally used black thread cause I thought white wouldnt look well with the colorful buttons. Line them on the pocket or area you want and sew.

7) The final step is the strands..Put the strand you like inside the belt hooks and sew. you can either stop sewing at the sides (since this will be the front of your bag) or you can continue sewing the strap all around the top of the bag.

Ok your bag should like something like this by the end

If youre doing this bag, please share pics of your final results and share new ideas with everyone, itd be great!
Thanx and I hope the tutorial was understandable, I really tried my best. Please let me know if anything wasnt clear.
Peace and love =)
