Oh and might want to get your roof inspected Homerof2.  We are in hail country here in the spring and when we got hail that size, we had to replace our roof.  It can cause pitting which can cause leaks later.  Nice quilts AIMR!

Whew - sorry I've been quiet but I've been swamped at work and the little ones keep me busy at home.  I have been sewing after they go to bed though.  I finally got the hang of the paper piecing after destroying a navy fat quarter lol.  I found a tute on Youtube from The Crafty Gemini that was pretty good though if any if you are still having trouble.

I'm having some bad luck this round for sure lol.  So I finished the Chinese Lanterns but they are 13" tall.  And the pattern says they are supposed to be 12.5" square so...what am I doing wrong?  Even when I do the math on the pattern pieces I come up with 13" and it seems like kind of a lot to trim off.  Did anyone else have this happen?  I'm not sure if I should just trim or what...

I'm having some House That Jack Built sizing/math issues too.  I haven't tried to figure those out yet.  SIGH...

My assumption would be that unless someone specified larger blocks/measurements, we would use the pattern as written...?

I was in a group where each person did three blocks...it was a mystery as they looked like a bunch of squares...but, when it was put together, it was a large picture of a tree!  It was fun not to know what it was going to look like, but I was so worried that I was going to mess up the picture! Grin

That would be a fun and interesting swap... Grin.

That does sound interesting.

sloth - are you in Canada or the North Pole? You are describing a winter day here...on yet another 100 degree F day.  The steam of my iron just makes me sweat more.   Tongue

Nine little whirligigs per block.   It kind of worked out that sloth's garden fence and kbrison's blocks have had compatible color schemes.   So as I cut out blocks for theirs, I also cut out little whirligig pieces from the leftovers.

They all turned out lovely!  So many different fabrics, too!  I like mixing prints like that...you had some really pretty greys and purples, too!

lol once you join this group, you can never quit...that is the rule... Grin.  We do let you go on vacation once in a while, but we are going to hassle remind everyone next round: carolmb, EllaRain, maremare, danyne, etc. etc. etc.

Yes they even let me go have a baby but here I am back again... Smiley

Off Topic Side Bar: It requires 36 different fabrics - also insane.  The longest bit is 6" and the widest is about 3.5".  Most are smaller than that.

But not as small as the 144 1" squares for your pixelated blocks!  Cheesy After those, 36 sounds like child's play. I'll be happy to send some scraps. As AIMR noted, then we won't have to sort and restore those scraps.

Tiny, but nice straight little squares and not paper piecing odd shapes.  Smiley

I need to sit down & start sewing!  I have cut out the pieces for the Chinese lanterns, maple leaves, garden fences, House That Jack Built, and 2/3 of the whirligigs.  And grouped all my icky thump fabrics, printed the template, & given it the evil eye.  Alas, nothing to take a picture of, other than my Ziplocks...

Aw thanks guys!  James is using fabric markers to draw Star Wars muslin blocks - he has a nack for drawing.  I'll sash with Star Wars fabric of course but I thought it would be fun to throw in a block or two like the Death Star too.

Off Topic Side Bar: I realize this is terrible beggary on my end, but if anyone has any scraps that are not too girly and are anywhere on the gray color scale that they'd like to throw in with my squares, I would be very appreciative.  If not, feel free to ignore me.  I have decided to go balls to the wall (pardon my language) on my paper piecing and attempt this.  Yes I realize I am insane.  But my son & I are making a Star Wars quilt & I thought it would be a nice touch...the love of a mother & all that mumbo jumbo.  It requires 36 different fabrics - also insane.  The longest bit is 6" and the widest is about 3.5".  Most are smaller than that.

So I'm working on the Whirligig and haven't cut the Friendship Octogons yet...  Grin  I think there is a small math error in the cardboard template so wanted to point it.  When you cut 1.25" off of 3.25", you end up with 2.0" (not 1.75").  In other words, your template will be 2.5″ (left side) x 1.25″ (skinny top) x 2.5″ (diagonal right edge if you measure perpendicular to the left side) x 2.0″ (wide bottom).
