1  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Not too sweet frosting recipe??? on: July 02, 2008 07:52:39 AM
Hi everyone!
I really need a good not-too-sweet white frosting recipe.  I want this to go on basic yellow cake mixes.  I have one already for lime/lemon frosting, but I can't seem to find one that I like that's plain.  Every experiment I have with buttercream ends up being too sweet for my liking.

I was thinking of maybe cream cheese, but don't know how that would taste on a yellow cake. Something more like what you would get from duncan hines or betty crocker, but not as processed.  Any suggestions from the peanut gallery?

2  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Polymer Clay: Completed Projects / cupcake and cookie earrings! on: July 01, 2008 07:52:47 PM
To keep going with my new found polymer clay craze, I made cupcake and chocolate chip cookie earrings.  This is only me second project, but I think I'm doing quite well!  I work in a bakery, so I'm going to wear these every day!

Inspired by Cookie Monster's appearance on the Colbert Report:

I decided to make me and my friend Katherine cookie lapel pins!!  I kept going and made cupcake lapel pins too since I love cupcakes so much.  This was my first experience with polymer clay.  Let me know what you think!

I'm quite proud of these cupcakes with the yummy looking frosting.  I had a hard time keeping the clay clean though. No matter how clean my hands were, there were always flecks of dust and lint in the pink Sad

I can't wait to send them to my friend who lives in NYC.  Hopefully she'll send pics of her wearing them!

4  COOKING / Dessert / Gavel Sugar Cookies with handmade cutter! on: June 12, 2008 10:48:45 AM
Hey everyone!
This is my first post, so go easy on me!
I wanted a cute, creative idea to thank the people who wrote recommendations for me for law school.  Since I was a little remiss in sending thank yous after they wrote them, I really needed a good gift since I was a few months out of date.  I decided to wait and see where I got in so that it looked like the gift was planned all along and I wasn't just bad about sending thank yous. Wink
So here it is!  This was my first time decorating sugar cookies, but I work at a cookie bakery (drop cookies, not decorated and iced cookies), so I decided to take my hand to this.  I used Nigella Lawson's cookie recipe from Food Network, and it was AWESOME!  I used two magazines that were about the same height to rest my rolling pin on to make sure that my cookies were all of even height.

A closeup  of one of the cookies:

I used gold luster dust on the cookies

Here's my homemade cookie cutter!  I'm really proud of it.  The only gavel cookie cutter I could find online cost a fortune, so I decided to figure out it I could make it myself.  Half an hour of wandering up and down the aisles at the local home improvement store, an hour of bending the metal, and 4 hours impatiently waiting for the glue to set, and this is what I got!  I'm super stoked at how it turned out.
Some of the cookies didn't get covered in icing.  I got bored with doing them, but in my head I justified it in case someone didn't like icing.

In the box with LOTS of shred (hoping that these don't break in transit):

And the box all closed and tied with ribbon:

Not as good as Martha, but then again, who is?
