1  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / Awesome Loft-Style Apartment... now what? on: August 21, 2008 03:06:41 PM
I basically just moved in to the space of my dreams, but unfortunately, I won't be here for very long.  Sad

I will be here for a few months, AND I am getting a new bed (which means new sheets!) so I have the opportunity to redecorate.

The architecture of this place is really cool; it used to be cotton mills back in the day.

I have the usual restrictions (can't paint, college budget, blah blah blah) but my roommate is pretty cool about letting me do my "crazy" things. (The loft space in the picture is ALL mine though, muah ha ha!)

Anyone have any unusual ideas, or even an awesome color scheme? (I've done a green/peachy-coral thing for a while, and I'm sick of it.)

Also, any neat lighting ideas would be helpful; this place is pretty dark most of the time.

(Please pardon my mess, I just moved in 2 days ago)
2  HOME SWEET HOME / Pet-Related Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Cat Deterrent or Blocker? on: August 21, 2008 02:22:09 PM
I just moved in to a new apartment; it's huge, and I love it!

The only problems are my cats. They sneak in to my roomie's room at night, and while she is very tolerant of them, they wake her up and scare her!

This is how they sneak in:

They go in through the kitchen, and since her door is usually closed, they can't get out and wake her up again...
She has put picture frames up on the ledge, but the cats just knock them over and make more noise.

Also, I live in the upstairs loft, with a 15-20 foot drop to the floor (measurements: not my strength) which the cat, of course, has jumped off more than once instead of using the stairs (which just take too long, apparently). It doesn't seem to hurt him, but I have a teenager-ish aged kitten that is not big enough, and she keeps trying to copy her big ol' daddy and jump too.

Clearly, this all must be stopped.

So if anyone has any good ideas for a screen/block of some sort (preferably that will still let light in; that is the only source of natural light) for the kitchen gap, or any ideas for a jump-deterrent for the loft gap, please let me know!

Also, if you can think of anything neat (and inexpensive!) to put on those blank walls (we JUST moved in a few days ago) it would be very helpful!

Thanks so much in advance!
3  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Dress Back Hem/finishing problem... on: June 25, 2008 01:35:31 PM
Hey everyone!

I am trying to make my first "real" dress and uh... I'm stuck!

Basically, the dress is sleeveless and plain in the front but open in the back with a long U shape. (Exposing from my shoulders to lower back.)

The U shape is what's getting me! How do I finish the seam? Tape? Hem? Both? Ack!

The fabric is a heavy-ish cotton, so it does need to be finished.

After staring at it for a loong time, I am still stuck.

(Behold, my super complex and sophisticated diagram! My camera is AWOL  Wink)
4  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / TUTORIAL: Gathered Cherry Blossom Bag on: May 14, 2008 01:00:53 PM
Yesterday I finished a little purse I made on a whim. I really like the way it turned out, and I've been using it all day today and it holds everything I need!

Some additional photos:

I posted a tutorial here: http://www.katesandusky.com/wordpress/?p=71

The craftsmanship could be better because I made it so quickly, but it turned out so cute!

BTW: I got the fabric at Joann recently (May 2008) so it is still available. It is very cute, and could be made in to nearly anything!

There is now a tutorial on page 2.  Grin
