1  Mario Birthday Cake for My 5 Year Old in Dessert by athomemom on: December 24, 2010 08:18:46 AM
My son is head over heels for Mario, so for his birthday a week ago, we got him a few games and I made him a cake. It's not perfect, but you never would have known from the shrieks he and his brother let out when they saw it!

It was just a regular sheet cake, one layer chocolate, one layer yellow cake, then decorated with buttercream and buttercream fondant.

(please excuse the mess, I took some of these before cleaning my disastrous kitchen . .. which actually my husband later cleaned for me AND did dishes!)

And the excited birthday boy who told me, "Thank you for making this AWESOME cake, mama!"

2  Felt Baby Shoes - New pair of shoes, New pic! in Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects by athomemom on: May 24, 2008 06:17:46 PM
I wanted to make some soft shoes for my 1 year old since he hates regular shoes, but all the patterns I found were copyrighted. Since I wanted something I could potentially sell in the future, I just drew up my own pattern. This is the prototype, rather rough, but it fits his foot. Smiley

I ended up doing another pair for my son using some of the suggestions given. So, here are the new ones, with the seams on the outside.

Im not really happy with the lettering. Embroidery is definitely not my strong point!

3  Bottle Cap Pincushions in Needlework: Completed Projects by athomemom on: May 17, 2008 11:01:57 AM
I found a tutorial on Flickr that makes bottle caps and felt into very cute pincushions. I decorated mine with a little bit of embroidery. Here is the first one that I tried . . . it is super simple since I didnt like how it came together.

The second one was a bit more intricate, with vines and flowers.

Let me know what you think!

4  Blue Crayon Cake for a First Birthday in Dessert by athomemom on: May 17, 2008 10:48:58 AM
My first time posting something Ive done on this site . . . I hope you like it. This is my sons first birthday cake. Hes always eating crayons that his 2 year old brother leaves laying around, so I decided to make him a truly edible one. Smiley

The cake is chocolate, with a plain crumb coat and filling and then the blue icing on top. It took a WHOLE bottle of food coloring to color that frosting! I have NO decorating tools . . . the icing was all spread with the back of a steak knife and the detail was done in chocolate icing that I put in a Ziploc bag and cut one corner off. It worked just fine!

Heres a shot of my little guy enjoying the cake, you can see how chocolatey it was inside.
