1  convocation dress in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by paw on: May 27, 2009 06:34:50 PM
it's graduation/prom season!

for convocation, i chose mccall 5881 dress d.

my mom had all the materials (fabric and zipper) in her sewing closet; she had gotten those for free, years ago, from her boss. aside from the time spent on cutting the fabric pieces and sewing this together, the only cost of this dress was for the pattern ($7).

straps were added, because a strapless dress is unsafe for me.

2  notebook made from old exercise books in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by paw on: March 16, 2008 12:59:55 PM
when i was in elementary school, the school provided us with exercise books. over the years, we accumulated a number of these partially filled notebooks. it seemed like a waste to throw away, so we've kept them in storage for all these years.

finally, i've found something to do with them. i un-stapled all the books, and re-bound the pages into signatures. i took the covers of one of the notebooks, and covered it with scrapbooking paper.

the cover i took was blue. i covered it with thin beige scrapbooking paper. i used white glue, which seeped through, resulting in those weird blue spots on the cover. after the binding was done, i made the mistake of pressing the book in between two heavy phone books, before the glue completely dried. when i took off the phone books, it left those white marks on the cover. so basically, i completely messed up the cover of this notebook. but it's not too big of a deal, since i intended to use this as my own private journal, eventually.

3  recipe book for mom in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by paw on: July 02, 2007 10:52:09 AM
mom wanted a notebook to collect her recipes. so i decided to make her one. another attempt at coptic binding.

the covers were made with cardboard i found in the recycling bin, covered with scrapbooking paper i got at the dollar store. i put too much glue; it seeped through and stained the back cover...

inside are 128 blank pages, a quarter of letter-sized paper.

detail on the spine. the thread broke midway through, and i had to start over!

using the same pattern (simplicity 5112), this is how my convocation dress turned out:

(i hope it's okay to revive an older topic...)

i got the simplicity 5112 pattern to make a dress to wear at convocation. but before making it out of the nice material, my mom made the dress with some extra material she had in her sewing closet. i'm not sure what the material was originally intended for, but it looks like bedsheets to me, haha.

anyway, i love the way it turned out. we made the shorter dress. but i found it too short, so my mom added the lace trim at the hemline. i think it's great.

this dress was made only to try out the pattern (for correct sizing, and to see if this style would suit me). but i love how it turned out; it is perfect for summer. now, i cannot wait until it gets hotter around here so that i can wear it.

my convocation is coming up soon... my mom will be making the actual dress sometime this week. maybe i'll post a picture of it then.
