91  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Make an easy, recycled triangle box on: December 13, 2009 09:53:29 PM

These little boxes are awesome! You can use them to organize craft supplies, to hold gifts, to stash your beading project on-the-go... whatever you need! They are very quick to make, and I'm sharing the pattern with you here - I didn't make it up, it's based on a box someone gave me that fell apart after many years of use.

Here's the pattern, hosted on flickr so you can download a large size if you want. You'll need the pattern, boxboard, a pen, a ruler, scissors, a tack or a nail, glue, clothes pins, and a length of round elastic.

Trace your pattern onto your boxboard, keeping in mind what you want to show on the top and on the side.

Cut it out and flip it over, then trace the lines on which you will need to fold (marked on the pattern).

Fold them all inward - it's easy to get a straight fold if you use the edge of a ruler. Now is also a good time to mark the little circle where the elastic will be.

Fold the little tabs in and fold the rest of the box up so you can see how it will come together. Take notice of any adjustments you may want to make when you glue it.

Glue the tabs on the inside of the walls of the box, holding it together with clothes pins (mini or otherwise Wink) until the glue is completely dry. I usually use mod podge or sobo craft glue on my boxes.

Notice how the edge of my box doesn't exactly line up with the edge of the wall? You don't have to do that, but I find my boxes sit better this way. This is one of the adjustments you should look for before you glue it.

Once the glue is dry, remove the clothes pins and measure out a length of elastic for your closure. The length will depend on how stretchy your elastic is - mine is pretty stretchy and I use a piece 7 inches long. Make sure to allow enough room to tie a knot on the underside.

Make a hole with your tack or nail where you marked earlier, and bring the piece of elastic through from the underside to the front. This can be annoying, so I usually use a piece of thread to pull it through, like a needle threader.

Knot your elastic so it doesn't slip out, and check to make sure it's a tight fit over your box.

You're done! Fill your box with stuff! Cheesy

Edit: Here's an alternate way to hold it shut if you run out of elastic, like I just did!

Just hold a length of ribbon in with a bead or a knot, and wrap the ends back around then spine and the up around front to tie.

I hope you find this useful; if you make some boxes I'd love to know about it.
92  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Rainbow string of cepahlopod banners! Embroidery, appliqué, & stencils. on: November 06, 2009 01:41:36 PM

I made this for ragdoll193 in the Sea Life Swap, and I was pretty proud of it. I hope she enjoys it. She had some cepahlopods in her list of favorite creatures, and I really love them too so I ran with it.

The first banner is an appliquéd giant squid:

Next we have a stenciled vampire squid:

And an appliquéd cuttlefish (with 3D ruffle):

This embroidered nautilus is one of my favorites:

This stenciled octopus is the first panel I did:

The last flag is an embroidered dumbo octopus:

French knot suckers!

And here's how it would look hanging on a wall:

Thanks for looking!
93  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / What do you think is missing from the crafting world? on: November 04, 2009 07:57:21 PM
I'm doing a project for my business class, so I'm looking for fresh ideas and demands that aren't being met. So where do you think there's room for a new business? Mail-order Jo-Ann's? Database of local craft fairs?
Any new ideas you have to throw out there would be welcome, thanks!

94  Calls for Swap Angels / Swap Angel Archive / Summer is for... \../ METAL \../ -- no angels needed on: August 12, 2009 02:46:20 PM
EDIT: ANGEL IS NOT NEEDED

Summer is for... \../ METAL \../ swap needs a great angel.

chimes was a great swapper and sent super-early. She has been extremely patient so I need an awesome angel for her!

Here's the original thread and here's the gallery.

You will make 4 points worth of crafts for chimes. She lives in the USA; her favorite bands/musicians are Death (Chuck Schuldiner), Children of Bodom (Alexi Laiho), In Flames, Amon Amarth, Dethklok, Megadeth (Dave Mustaine) and EARLY Metallica (nothing after 1989) and NIN. She is allergic to pollen and cats.

Please pm me for her full questionnaire. Thanks!
95  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Felt cat ears on hair clips *tutorial added* on: August 08, 2009 12:41:03 PM

I made these for a friend of mine who was admiring my plastic cat ears that are on elastic. I'm giving them to her tonight, so in the mean time Lisaisab models.

It doesn't show much in the pictures, but the felt is very sparkly.

They are so light, you don't even notice them. I think I'll be making more of these. They are very simple to do, but I was thinking of doing some step-by-step photos if anyone is interested.

EDIT: Scroll down or click here for tutorial!

And edited for a picture of the ears with their new owner (didn't want to use flash at the concert but I think it looks pretty awesome).

97  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Crochet hook roll, lacey accent bits on: May 31, 2009 12:30:48 PM

I made this for the recent easy peasy swap for xochristyt. I've never done crochet, but I knew that she was into it so I browsed all the great ones here on craftster* and... just started cutting and sewing. It came out pretty OK though! The pockets are of varying sizes; I only had one hook to test it out with though.

Fold-down top and accent bit:

Back:

*yeah... notice how the tag "crochet hook roll" is like ten times bigger than it was? that would be me.
98  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / ...panda's totally fake... on: May 29, 2009 01:33:22 PM

I embroidered this shirt for the decorated shirt swap for stitch81 (link shows her pictures). I hope she enjoyed it! Some themes she suggested were bamboo and pandas.

The back:

The front:

It says her name in Japanese katakana (pandas are mostly Chinese... but I don't know Chinese! You work with what you've got).

There's a bit of a story that goes along with the making-of:
My friend lisaisab and I were recently employed by Columbia Pictures to work on the movie Salt. We had training as stunt drivers (sounds more exciting that it was) for the scene in which Angelina Jolie is involved in this chase scene - she jumps from a big rig truck on one highway ramp to a box truck on another ramp, and then steals a motorcycle and zooms around cars in a traffic jam. At least... that's what her stunt double does! I really know nothing about the movie except for this one scene. Anyway, if you've ever been involved in this kind of movie business deal, you know that the "work" you do is mostly waiting around until you are needed (if you're needed), so you really should have something to occupy yourself during those long, long hours of doing nothing. Long story short, I thought it was cool that this shirt was made on a Hollywood movie set and wanted to tell you about it for some reason. Huh.

100  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Craftster Picture Hosting Support / Photo hosting page is the Old Craftster on: May 16, 2009 08:59:27 PM
I usually host pictures on flickr, but this time I went to put some swap photos on craftster just to simplify my life. It worked fine, no problems, but the page has the old craftster set up, you know, cork board and thumbtacks. I can see strips of the blue mesh along each side, though.

Just a heads up if you guys want to update that area of the site!
