Hello! I'm proposing this OWL privately, as it will be for a swap. I'm one day shy of three weeks 'til I have to send it out, so I hope it qualifies!

OWL Subject & Option(if available): Care of Magical Creatures - Option 1
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Forest animals mini art quilt
Brief Description: I will be representing some of my partner's favorite woodland creatures (moths) in the form of a mini art quilt. This will be my first MAQ, so I'll be going pretty slowly!

Expected timeline:

week 1: design sketches and materials gathering, preliminary sewing
week 2: lots of sewing and embelishing
week 3: backing, binding, finishing touches

materials will include fabric, thread, paint, buttons/beads, and natural objects (bark, etc.)

OWL Subject & Option: Care of Magical Creatures - Option 1
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Forest moth MAQ
Project Page Link: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=434495.0
Brief Description: My partner in the Enchanted Forest swap finds moths magical, and I agree! I made this mini art quilt to capture some of that essence.

Class: Apparition
Extra Credit: June CoMC (my fresh garden produce is highly prized!)
SPEW: n/a
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: BBQ Pizza
Brief Description: Think of how terrible it would be to splinch away your stomach! To help me concentrate on proper Apparition, I made this to fill up my stomach, which I hope will help keep it with me. For those who have never tried making pizza with barbecue sauce instead of tomato sauce, omg try it it's amazing.

Half a ball of frozen pizza dough
Barbecue sauce
Fresh mozzarella
Grated cheddar cheese
Fresh or frozen corn
Red onion
Fresh kale

Stretch out your thawed dough as thin as you can get it into a vaguely pizza-like shape, and lay it on a floured cookie sheet. Spread out a good layer of barbecue sauce right up to the edges. Layer on sliced mozzarella, grated cheddar cheese, thinly sliced zucchini, and thinly sliced red onion. Sprinkle on some corn kernels and torn kale leaves. Bake according to your pizza dough instructions (about 15 minutes at 375 for mine). DEVOUR.

Class: Care of Magical Creatures
SPEW: n/a
House: Hufflypuffly
Project Name: Crow galaxy shirt
Brief Description: I admit I considered bringing a crow to Hogwarts instead of my cat, but I don't know how well she would have gotten along with all the owls! I used a stencil, bleach, and fabric paint to reflect the mysticism of a crow.

Class: Potions
SPEW: n/a
House: Huff to the Puff
Project Name: Preserving strawberries 3 ways
Project Page Link: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=434479.0 (recipe links in this post)
Brief Description: Inspired by the number 3, I brewed up some yummy strawberry potions.

Challenge: Quidditch World Cup - July Challenge
Extra Credit: June Divination (my garden is my soothing place)
SPEW: n/a
House: Hufflin'
Project Name: Boot portkey planters
Brief Description: I went for the traditional boot portkey, but I couldn't bear to just have an old boot laying around my yard. So I turned a pair of my old work shoes into planters, so they can serve a purpose until I need to take one of them to the World Cup.

Class: Transfiguration
SPEW: n/a
House: Pufflehuff
Project Name: Felt mushroom magnets
Brief Description: I think I still need to work on Gemino - my second mushroom was a bit smaller than my first. But considering in practice I couldn't even get them the same color, I think it's pretty good!

5  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / White moth mini art quilt on: July 09, 2014 06:08:45 PM
My partner in the Enchanted Forest swap, La Chapa, said some of her favorite forest critters are moths. This MAQ started to form in my head - a white moth on some kind of foresty background.

I ended up using Eudeilinia herminiata as my reference moth, with three different white patterns in the body and wings, and paint for the grey spots.

I added in some metal charms, and had a different embroidered quilting for each strip of fabric on the background.

One of the strips got painted dots, and another got beads, but mostly it was embroidery.

I used http://www.embroidery.rocksea.org/reference/picture-dictionary/ for embroidery reference, and it was great as always!

The antennae were especially fun to do!

This was my first try at a mini art quilt, and I definitely think I'm going to do more!

7  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Preserving strawberries 3 ways on: July 09, 2014 09:02:47 AM
Hi there! This is pretty much my first go at canning - I did some whole tomatoes last summer which worked well, and thought I'd take a stab at jams and such. I was able to pick a whole mess of strawberries for free at the farm where I work, so I got to fool around with a few different recipes.

I worked from the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving, which was a great resource for a beginner like me.

First up, basic strawberry jam: http://www.freshpreserving.com/recipes/strawberry-jam

This uses sooo much sugar, and is pretty sweet. Really delicious, though. I love it with cream cheese!

Then I tried maple strawberry smooch: http://www.bernardin.ca/pages/recipe_page/51.php?pid=384 (not the exact recipe from my book, but pretty much the same)

Mmmm this was my favorite. Great on ice cream, or on yogurt with granola.

And last, strawberry lemonade concentrate: http://www.freshpreserving.com/recipes/strawberry-lemonade-recipe
This recipe didn't make as much as it said it would - I wish they'd given the measurement for strawberry puree, instead of cups of whole berries, which varies a lot.

Again, very sugary, but tangy too! I mixed it with seltzer to serve.

My one issue with all of these was that I didn't have a good way to skim off the foam before transferring the mixtures into jars. I hope that doesn't effect the preserving too much.

Overall, I'd say it was a great success! I'm ready to can ALL THE THINGS. Bring on the produce!

The smooch is just a sauce with pureed strawberries, maple syrup, apple juice, and pectin. I've been drizzling it on ice cream, and yogurt with granola, and it is delicious!

Ooo looks great! This is also the summer of first canning adventures for me - I did strawberry jam and maple strawberry "smooch" last weekend. I bought the Ball book of canning, so I have tons of great recipes!

As for equipment, I found the jar lifter at a tag sale, and have just been using wooden chopsticks to handle the lids. I need to rig up a better rack for boiling the jars though, or maybe I'll break down and buy an actual one.

Glad everything suits you, La Chapa! Here are a few pics I took before I sent:

That crow shirt I didn't intend to bleed so much, but I think the effect is actually kind of cool with the paint over it.

The first of many MAQs, I hope!
